Autistic children are more likely to experience problems with anxiety than non-autistic kids, which can have lasting effects on their well-being and development. Researchers talked to autistic kids themselves, who said that "Being understood is the safest path." journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

There is growing evidence that supports Intense World Theory. For example, that study that shows autistic brains produce 42% more information at rest. All of that hyper-functioning of neurons produces more input to process. And autistics process information more as it is.

Intense World Theory explains my experience perfectly. Also monotropism. Non-deficit-based theories.

It's possible that some autistics with forms of lesser sensory sensitivity might be experiencing a kind of sensory shut-down to find equilibrium in an otherwise intense world. I can be somewhat that way, very shut down, but also with strong sensory sensitivity. I relate very much to IWT.

So, there are so many different theories people have to explain autism. Lack of Theory of Mind, monotropism, Intense World Theory, and several others. Curious to know: which theories does the autistic community find relatable to experience? #autistic

It's often just good fortune, people stumbling upon the right thing that works for them. Luck. Make a choice or series of choices that just happen to not work out can be massively impacting. So many ND people are under-employed or not employed.

And this isn't at all akin to RFK Jr's fanatical health notions or his rabid anti-vax politics. I'm pro-vaccination and don't believe they cause autism. There are intelligent rational approaches to using "alternative" therapies. Just doing Tai Qi in the forest helps me feel okay in the world. 4/4

I don't pathologize or want a cure for my autistic traits (which was the focus of the cited source). But I do want to live a healthy lifestyle, with diet, exercise, non-toxic plant-based medicine, all of which have helped me enormously cope with my existence in the world. 3/

The cited paper mainly points out the lack of comprehensive research on these non-conventional approaches. Lack of research funding for these therapies has long been an issue, partly because no drug company is going to invest in them unless they can patent them, which often isn't possible. 2/

There isn't much that lessens autistic traits in either conventional medicine or (non-drug) integrative medicine which includes herbs, etc. But can some of these approaches reduce anxiety, insomnia, stress, increase well-being, help to get through a day? Yes. I know from experience. 1/

Last I checked it was behind a paywall. So they propose four types? As in subtypes or are they suggesting types unrelated to each other? I've often thought there were possible subtypes that are (in some ways) different manifestations but still with the same underlying basis.

They follow exclusively people who identity themselves primarily by their curriculum vitae, not whom they are as real people, as revealed by their views, or what they choose to communicate. They tend to not follow anyone who isn't productive. And that has been a social peeve of mine forever. 2/

Show them you understand the autistic perspective, what is really behind autistic ways, rather than the clinical, pathologizing perspective. Ex: when autistics blurt out facts or views, don't call them rude, instead understand that autistics are often just being innocently honest.

I promise you, you’re not angry enough. The rage I feel right now as a father of an autistic child is one that could burn down Washington. How unimaginably cruel, reckless, and inhumane. The women later lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital. This must end. Jail these people.

Some autistic women suggest their anti-social behaviors are misunderstood & underneath it all they really like people. I want to be clear that my anti-social behaviors are because I don’t like (most) people. To be fair, some of that is being stuck in MAGA-ville. I was more outgoing in Maine.

I tend to dislike the environment created by humans, and prefer the natural world of trees, woods, forests, oceans, rivers. I don't just avoid people, I avoid their entire world. But I can be very empathetic, and I will respond well to gentle, open-minded people. I live in Oregon, not a red state.

I have had to remove a few FB comments from people who demanded to know why Aliya Rahman, the autistic woman who was pulled from her car by ICE in Minneapolis, didn’t “just follow instructions.” These comments, unfortunately, reveal lack of understanding about being autistic. Here is why. 1/

Their reactions are due to the deeply embedded deficit-based conceptions of autism that come from film and TV. We really need better autistic characters in film, since that seems to be what informs people more than anything. I see so much more going on around me than people think. I see too much.

Not sure what you mean, but the statement resonates. My trauma isn't going away anytime soon, after all these years. I can't think it away. I can do things that calm me, and I can reconnect with myself in moments of time, but the trauma is still there.

It's often back-fired on me with life-impacting consquences when I've told someone (with some kind of power over my life) that I'm autistic. Most of my remaining family began treating me as if I were intellectually disabled, so there's that too.

One of the key ingredients to being autistic is no key ingredient to being autistic. Time and time and time again I see someone saying you need to be like this or you need to be like that. Guess what, it's a load of rubbish. Stereotypes can limit others and this sort of behaviour needs to stop.

Thank you, yes, I will block if necessary. This is a common experience for autistics. So I try to use these occasions to increase awareness in people. But yes, no one is engaging the two examples (besides me, that is, but I see it as so ignorant it doesn't leave much of an impact on me).

Ppl need to know they can't make generalized assumptions about us, just because they saw a TV show with an "autistic character" (usually written by writers w/ flawed understandings) which makes ppl think they learned something. We're all different. Autism shows up in different ways for each of us.

I came to BlueSky to get away from this kind of oppressive hate speech that is so prevalent on twitter these days, since Musk took over. Welp, seems not so different here. I reported this post to moderation. Nothing has happened. So it's up to autistics to push back against this.

Stray Autistic Cat @strayautisticcat.bsky.social · 16/01/2026
This is the 2nd autistiphobic (meaning bigoted/hateful towards autistics as a group) comment I've found in the last hour promoting false memes and negative stereotypes against autistics. So, this person thinks autistics can't be "clever" or "street smart" simply because they're autistic. 1/
121
Stray Autistic Cat @strayautisticcat.bsky.social · 16/01/2026
So, I reported to Bluesky moderation this clear example of bigotry and hate-speech about autism. No response yet. Looks like when it comes to ableism and attacks on autistics, Bluesky is as bad as twitter, which before Musk took over, would take steps to moderate this treatment of autistics.
