Someone I haven't talked to in years messaged me to ask my detailed thoughts on the covid conscious lesbian bar situation so here's some screenshots

1) Why would the LGBTQ+ be so against non mask day?

2) is there anything the bar could do that would remedy the issue?

3) do you think the ableism claim is fair or is it a small vocal minority

So I watched this video but I was also already somewhat familiar with the situation because a lot of people have been talking about it.

1. I think the important context to keep in mind is that this isn't "the LGBTQ community" but rather the collected patrons of this particular bar - continuing to enforce a mask mandate multiple years after most places have stopped doing so will naturally have attracted a community of people for whom this is important. So while there does tend to be a correlation between Igbt people and those with immune deficiencies or additional concern regarding things like covid, I don't think you would see this kind of response outside of these unique circumstances (I.e. it being multiple years since the de facto end of the pandemic)

3. I think it's complicated. I myself am

not immunocompromised or affected by any chronic illness (other than chronic pain but I'm not going to count that for the purposes of this discussion). So I might not be the most important person to ask this to, but I think this whole situation is representative of an issue that often crops up in LGBT, leftist, and activist circles. In grouping people together societally around the concept of being accepting and supportive of others in a virtuous and morally just way, you tend to encourage a competition to see who can be the most correct. And so you will find people who are generally politically and morally aligned arguing with each other and nitpicking very small differences in ideology and practice because doing so signals to everybody else in the room that one is the best person. I think most people who do this don't do it intentionally, but lots of people do it, regardless. So when they talk about the meeting where people deflect

from the-

- fact that the bar will have to close if they don't make this operational change, and instead focus on things that could be seen as racist, ableist, or otherwise unjust, what they're really saying is that they want a designated space to feel better than

designated space to feel better than everyone else.

I don't think any of these people are incorrect in their views on the situation and it sounds like they do have what's best for each individual in mind. But when you can't put aside or reconcile potential downsides for the survival of a project, a space, or a population, you just end up with a bunch of people arguing while the ship sinks.

And I think that is what is happening here. The owner is trying their absolute best to let their dedicated regulars know that 6 days out of the week that bar is a space for them to have their safe community where they can live the way they feel most comfortable. But in having held out to curate that space for so long, the community the bar found are the least flexible people with -

- the best and most defensible moral ideals in mind. When you're up against that type of person, it's very hard to argue against them without looking like you are fighting for some form of bigotry. And I think that's some kind of logical fallacy but I don't know all of the words for those
