@goingmedieval.bsky.social Another great pod on medieval women! Thanks. In grad school I read Marriage & Fam by the Gies's & I have a vague memory of you saying in another pod that that work is problematic. Does it hold up? BTW, I only had 1 class on Medieval Eur and didn't know what I was missing

Social media is destroying democracy and accelerating idiocracy. But it's also just...really, really boring.

Crew Agreements Advent Calendar, Day 1: Muster Roll, Plymouth, 1756 I said I should do an advent calendar and I'm nine days behind, so forgive me while I catch up. Anyway, we're starting with precursor to the Crew Agreements, a Muster Roll - more info to follow in the thread
A long, narrow rectangular form, about 2 feet by 6 inches, archival blocks holding it up and and a a weight holding it open. It features printed columns and headers, and a printed titles interspersed with blanks like a mad lib. It is labeled: Muster Roll of the John & Phillip Galley of Plymouth. John Sterling, Master, from Plymouth to Leghorn from the 5th of January 1753 to the 2nd of February 1756. It features 12 crew, with columns filled out for each titled, from left to right: Names of Officers and Seamen; Post on Board; Where Born and Place of Aboad; Name of Ship and Master and What Voyage each man last performed; Time when and place where entered; Time when and place where discharged (a hand-written note saying 'pressed'), Run, Dead, Kill'd, Slain, or Drowned; Time when and place where Hurt or Wounded; Number of Months and Days on board; Amount of the Duty to be paid for each man

For me, the most incredible artefacts from the ancient world are the letters people wrote on clay tablets and sent to one another over thousands of years in Mesopotamia, going back to more than 5,000 years ago. They contain recognisable humanity, warmth and humour. Here's a thread of my favourites.
Two scribes depicted in an ancient Assyrian low relief, using styluses to write on clay tablets.A cuneiform tablet with writing on it.
