Introducing: We Dare To Pray A new series of events at St Nicholas Church, Leicester, held on the last Friday of each month, where we gather together to explore different ways of praying.
We dare to pray: Ignatian prayer

Friday June 26th, 18:30 - 19:39

St Nicholas church Leicester city centre, LE1 4lb

We Dare To Pray is a monthly event where we explore different kinds of prayer

In June we'll be exploring Ignatian Prayer, sometimes called Imaginative Prayer.

In the Ignatian Prayer Method, we enter into the story to learn more about and participate more fully in the mind, heart, and work of Christ. As we read the scripture we will imagine ourselves in a Bible story, using our senses to form a full and intimate picture of the scene in our minds, and connect more deeply with God.

Imaginative prayer is not an attempt to discover "what really happened." It is an effort to enter more deeply into Scripture and to get to know Jesus more intimately.

Many of you who've visited will have noticed that though our north aisle is the community gathering space, with the kitchen, toilet, and library, it's a bit grotty. We're hoping to do a small refresh of the space, making it somewhere more comfortable that people want to be. But we need your help...
The north aisle of St Nicholas church, with plastic chairs strewn everywhere, a large desk used as a table, piles of books, and a large crossThe western part of the north aisle of St nicks showing a toilet door, a cupboard topped by piles of books, a noticeboard, and a mini fridge The eastern part of the north aisle of St nicks showing a cluttered windowsill, a countertop with sinks and a kettle, and colouring in stuck to the wooden backsplash
The north aisle again showing the table, and a pew at the back, covered in clutter.

A snippet from the sermon Dr Nicolete Burbach gave at our TDoR service last night. You can read the full sermon here: www.academia.edu/125827013/La...
It is natural to try to explain suffering. But there is a risk in it too: that we replace its reality with a consoling illusion. In trying to make sense of it, we can distract ourselves from what may be its senseless nature. In trying to justify it, we can distract ourselves from the injustice at its heart. I think the Gospel writer falls into this trap: “it’s OK that Lazarus is dead – it’s all for a good cause…” But it isn’t. We might also be tempted to explain suffering and death in a different way: by jumping right over it to land at the happy ending of the story, shoving Jesus up onto the Cross and forcing the Psalmist’s words into his mouth, dragging Lazarus from his tomb, then telling ourselves the problem is solved. This kind of ‘reading ahead’ reduces suffering to a narrative device within a fundamentally joyful story. It robs suffering of the depth of its tragedy. Such an approach can never do justice to the reality of our suffering. As the names of the dead we read today remind us, Lazarus has not yet risen. The tragedy is as deep as the tomb itself: we can
only weep before it. Worse, fast-forwarding to the resurrection joy can distract us from present suffering and the hard and painful fight against it, refocusing our attention on fantasies about a
day when everything has worked out.
These sorts of attitudes are a temptation. Justifying suffering, or moving on from it to look at
hopeful visions of the future lets us feel like everything is going to be OK, and so like everything
ultimately is OK.

Welcome St Nicks! I'm their (queer Atheist) ornithologist in residence, which reminds me I should plan my next residency.

All are welcome at St Nicholas, Leicester's oldest church, dating back to the 800's. We are a member of the Inclusive Church Network, and have been welcoming and affirming LGBT+ people for well over 50 years. Why not come and visit us sometime?
ALL ARE WELCOME AT ST NICHOLAS, LEICESTER'S OLDEST CHURCH. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WORSHIPPING GOD IN THIS BUILDING SINCE THE 800'S, AND WE CONTINUE TO OFFER A GENTLE AND WELCOMING SPACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND GOD AND THEMSELVES THROUGH PRAYER AND REFLECTION. WE ARE A MEMBER OF THE INCLUSIVE CHURCH NETWORK, AND HAVE BEEN WELCOMING AND AFFIRMING LGBT+ PEOPLE FOR WELL OVER 50 YEARS. SITED IN THE CENTRE OF THE MULTICULTURAL CITY OF LEICESTER WE ARE ALSO PROUD TO BE PART OF THE DIOCESAN INTERCULTURAL WORSHIPPING COMMUNITIES PROJECT. HERE WE WORK TOGETHER AND LEARN FROM EACH OTHER, SO THAT AS A COMMUNITY WE MAY BETTER REFLECT AND CELEBRATE THE WONDROUS DIVERSITY OF GOD'S CREATION. COME AND BE WHO GOD CREATED YOU TO BE, WITHOUT FEAR OF JUDGEMENT OR EXCLUSION.
