I bring up ROI often in conversations around arts & culture. the promises of big projects like stadiums, etc vs investing in the arts. something like Blink Cincinnati, a light & art festival, spent $7M for their 2024 festival and generated $126M in a weekend vs $_00M and it takes years to build

In which Richmond's highest-paid public official, who has blown several key deadlines and job responsibilities since being hired by @dannyavula.bsky.social to much fanfare last year, declares himself deserving of "at least a year" of severance pay: www.richmonder.org/budget-propo...

During Monday’s meeting, Councilor Kenya Gibson (3rd District) said she was concerned about large payouts and whether they would help or hurt staff consistency.

“If someone could make a $200,000 payout by leaving, I’m not sure that serves our residents best,” Gibson said.

Donald said the proposed severance policy would help make the city a “model employer.”

Referring to himself as one of the most “sought-after” public administrators in the country, Donald said he was unlikely to take a job anywhere “without an agreement to have a severance of at least a year.”

The possibility of a severance payout can be an important staff protection, he said, especially in a “very politicized environment.”

“This is a tough environment to work in,” Donald said. “I can tell you that myself. It’s just not easy.”

There is no specific amount of money budgeted for increased severance in Avula’s budget proposal. Donald indicated any payouts would likely be funded through vacancy savings or other measures.

DLSS5 this and AI blah blah blah and one of the best selling games on steam now (Slay the Spire 2) is an indie game made with an open source game engine (Godot), and the biggest console seller is a game with wonderfully cartoony art direction (Pokopia). Ok thats my gaming post for the year.

NEW: For the @richmonder.bsky.social, I reviewed city payment records and service contracts to find out just how much Richmond has paid Flock, the notorious surveillance-tech company that makes the ~100 always-on cameras and AI-powered software RPD uses to track cara throughout the city and state.

RPD has spent $1 million on Flock license-plate readers. With those contracts up for renewal, anti-surveillance activists call for cancellation while Mayor, Council demur

The Mayor wrote that he “continues to be both supportive of RPD's use of Flock as a tool to solve crimes and also continues to take the privacy and auditing seriously.”

This is not "reformable". Also Mayor Danny Avula in Richmond has done nothing about DHS illegally using Flock cameras in Richmond other than being a walking adverisement for how great totalitarian surveillance states are and saying he will renew the contract so they can keep tracking us.

I tried to like Danny Avula. Im always hoping Richmond finally got a good mayor. Then he refused to answer questions about RPD using Flock cameras in illegal ways. Now I find out he wrote condolences emails to people who lost loved ones with ChatGPT. This is disgusting.
