Was the Parthenon exquisitely designed to "correct" for visual distortions in its perfect geometry? This idea seems to be widely believed. But it seems it doesn't stand up to scrutiny. royalsocietypublishing.org/rsos/article...

The illusion of illusions: there are no optical corrections in the Parthenon
Abstract. One of the oldest and most enduring myths in human history is the belief that the Parthenon was cleverly designed with various curved structures

The image is a meme styled like a framed painting of the philosopher René Descartes, with his long dark hair and clothing visible but the central part of his face blurred out. At the top, in bold black letters on a white background, the text reads: “Descartes when he realized that people who don`t think also exist.”

Natural Perspective is an approach that basically ignores the optical projection. Euclid called it 'visual cone’ (300 BC). Gibson later called it 'visual solid angle’ (1986). I apply Rational Trigonometry (Wildberger 2005) and get pleasantly simple expressions. youtu.be/9qCtaVkFZsI

I do not like the summer heat but I do like to walk while talking about science and mathematics in 17th century Amsterdam. So I scheduled an Amsterdam Geo-Walk in the early morning of Wednesday 22 July. That is in 10 days when it is predicted to be a little cooler. www.skool.com/amsterdam-ge...

I visited Amsterdam for the first time (without parents) in the early 1980s. Ed van der Elsken captured 1982 Amsterdam in his documentary “Een fotograaf filmt Amsterdam”. The city was clearly less international than it is now, but paradoxically also more diverse. Link below.

The Arnolfini Portrait, masterpiece of Northern Renaissance, oil on oak panel, 1434 by Jan van Eyck, died in Bruges #OTD 1441; tender memorial probably of wife who died in childbirth; richly detailed interior of brass candelabra, snuffed candle, faithful dog, mirror reflecting artist. ALT NG London
The couple’s costly fur-trimmed and lined clothes (his purple silk velvet tabard trimmed with sable and her spring green houppelande lined with miniver) suggest the male subject is Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, silk merchant from Lucca, who lived in Bruges & supplied fine textiles to Philip the Good of Burgundy, ruler of Europe's richest court, and patron of Van Eyck.

The young woman has been identified as Giovanni’s wife Costanza, thought to have died in childbirth.

The intimacy & tenderness of the couple, with their joined hands, is reflected in the convex mirror, which also bears witness to the shadowy presence of the artist, whose signature & date are just above: ‘Johannes de Eyck fuit hic 1434’ (Jan van Eyck was here 1434).

The painting passed into the Habsburg Collections (Margaret of Austria, Philip II of Spain) before The National Gallery.

Note: forthcoming Exhibition of Van Eyck at National Gallery London - from November 2026.

I have heard people say that getting a PhD means overly specializing in an extremely tiny piece of knowledge. I think that it is essentially an exercise in realizing how f#€k!ng difficult it is to actually really understand something.
