I had cramp in my calf while sleeping last night and as a consequence am limping around this morning. So yeah, I've reached the age where I'm picking up injuries WHILE SLEEPING.

I'm listening to the album now and thinking, 'could AI have come up with this? Not a chance. In your face, stochastic parrot. Come back to me when you've decided to fly an inflatable pig over a power station'.

I struggle to see how amoral algorithm-based software can be tightly aligned with human interests.

This is both outrageous and instructive. If by this stage 'agents' can't be stopped from breaking the law in such a flagrant manner we must question whether alignment is even remotely possible. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

I like to think I've done my bit to make the world slightly more amusing today, as I managed to convince my French mother-in-law that bagpipe music has been outlawed by new international human rights and environmental legislation.

Asylum seeking people don’t have the freedom to work, they don’t even have the freedom to shop using cash or choose where to shop, in temp accommodation they don’t have the freedom to cook or choose their own food - honestly this headline is batshit

419) Detroit techno from Inner City and their debut album Paradise (Big Fun in the US). One of the first techno albums to achieve commercial success. The hiss of the synthesised high-hats and the chunky, punchy keyboard parts came to define early 90s dance music. The songs aren't catchy though. Odd.

418) Whimsy a-plenty in The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion by Scottish psychedelic folk outfit The Incredible String Band. This isn't without charm and craft, but the first half in particular rambles all over the place, often lacking structure. There's a bit more to cling onto in Side B.

I'm not sure why but it sounded to me like an album from earlier in the decade. Perhaps it's the Roland TR-909 drum machine that does it. Either that or I don't have a good gauge for how technology shapes sound throughout the 80s.

417) The Impressions - Greatest Hits. A compilation of early, Curtis Mayfield-era tracks. Smooth, fabulously harmonised R&B. Their music has a really spacious quality to it.

416) Power by Ice-T. His second and ultimately most commercially successful album, it having gone platinum. To my ear the production has dated very badly. It's an ominous, heavy feeling album despite the bouncy beats and jangly synths. I can't say I got much out of it at all.

Stewart Davidson @stewartdavidson.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
I'd view that as a reasonable rule if I could be convinced this type of reasoning was actually in operation. But I can't remember ever seeing a player hit a shot that doesn't go in, get wiped out in the process, and it lead the ref to book the defender even though no penalty is awarded.
000
Stewart Davidson @stewartdavidson.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
Having said that, could it be that advantage is being played? Perhaps the logic is that if the shot is allowed to stand no penalty can be awarded?

Stewart Davidson @stewartdavidson.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
I think if you move the entire McGinn action into midfield and assume it's a through-ball, it's a free kick every time and potentially a booking. Yet we see some really dodgy tackles ignored after a shot has been released (see Isak and Gyokeres last season).
100
Stewart Davidson @stewartdavidson.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
I get what you're saying but I actually think it's the consequentialism that's rightly missing from the logic applied outside the box. I'm not sure refs take into account the quality of the pass when a player is clobbered by a late challenge in midfield.
120
Stewart Davidson @stewartdavidson.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
I'll never understand why late challenges like the one made on McGinn are never punished with a penalty. He's wiped out after having got the shot away. Were that a pass in the middle of the pitch it would be a free kick every time. A clearer foul you'll never see.

Players I'm looking forward to seeing: Pedri, Gilberto Mora, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Lamine Yamal (obviously) and Messi, perhaps for the last time. It would be nice to see Saka show some form after an average season due to injuries.

I reckon Michael Olise could grab the Golden Ball as well as the Golden Boot, although his teammate Mbappé or the in-form Harry Kane could snatch the latter in particular.

It's World Cup prediction time. I have France beating England in the final. As for Scotland, the loss of Gilmour can't be overstated. I have them missing out on automatic qualification for the last 32 but scraping through as one of the best third-placed teams, only to be beaten by Germany.

Can't disagree with any of this. Given that we're doing the list alphabetically it'll come as no surprise that Ice T is next up. I recognise that gangsta rap is an important portrayal of gang culture, poverty and oppression, but I can't say I often find it to be an enjoyable listen.

We have a wasabi plant in the garden. I just took a look at it post-sunset and it's quite a hit with the local slug and snail population. I'm now trying to work out whether it's alluring these munchers to the garden or acting as a sacrificial plant upon which they can satiate themselves. Stay or go?

Stewart Davidson @stewartdavidson.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Couldn't disagree more with that review actually. Quote: 'an unvarying midtempo pace gives proceedings a ponderous air'. What does the reviewer want, happy hardcore? It's a BoC album reflecting on societal collapse not Scooter 'Back in the UK'.

Yeah, there was a less than complimentary review in the Guardian too. I'm not sure what (or what they're not) hearing. Pitchfork gave it 8.6/10 and rym contributors have it at 4.01/5 after 6,164 ratings. It takes several listenings for it to really bed in but it's worth it.
