I'd even say there's no such thing as the "non-political," but yes. Also this part: "Second, the critical tradition and the associated contextual approaches to the nonpolitical offer important inspiration for improving operationalization in empirically oriented political communication research."

Also, there’s value in people being able to write. And not just in 80-minute blocks in a blue book, but being able to communicate in written form some information that they have to think about and pore over and convey in longer form. Seems we’re giving up on that with in-person oral/written exams.

The combat correspondents and combat camera Marines who worked for me would have plenty of candid pics of Marines and sailors, too. We just usually wouldn’t publish them. Again, no way to know either way, and frankly this is a silly thing to go back and forth about.

Combat correspondents/photographers/videographers document training exercises as well. The location of the photos has nothing to do with who took them.

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.

@lilymasonphd.bsky.social spitting truth:
From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The problem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

This is a perfect example of what I call the weaponization of political ontology. Having a policy of avoiding political speech seems reasonable on its surface in certain situations, but it can be easily used to shut down disfavored speech. Manuscript in progress. bsky.app/profile/stew...

Yeah, someone else brought up CAR too. 45º is one thing, but there are vanishingly few scenarios in which shooting like this would be optimal. Also, CAR is mostly used for handguns. This bozo is holding an M4 fully sideways, his left hand awkwardly reaching under and around to hold a forward grip 🤡

I’m honestly curious about what you’d have veterans who are now critical of the U.S. military/govt do. The past can’t be changed. So going forward, would you rather they speak out against the military, or not? Seriously, what’s your end game here? Or is this just your whole personality?

Believe it or not, my military experience and critique of the U.S. military factors a lot into my teaching. I'm also not going to hide my service and pretend I didn't do what I did. Which, again, is why you are better off engaging with strangers in good faith instead of being...whatever this is.

Chokely Carmichael🥋 @stewartcoles.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I put that there so people know where I'm coming from. They're more apt to listen when I say something critical of the military/govt when they know that I've actually served and know what I'm talking about from that perspective. It's actually a persuasion technique I teach about in my courses.

Growing up in the 80s, when someone said "terrorist," I immediately thought of some Irish guy and The Troubles. It was less 24 and more Patriot Games...but even that movie had the Irish terrorists training with nondescript Arab baddies.

I don't cover that BoB fact. I mean, "brown people bad/stupid/savage" definitely predates 9/11 by far. Think True Lies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, even older movies. I don't disagree with you on that—believe it or not, people's politics change, and I do not look kindly on my service, to put it mildly. Which is also why maybe you shouldn't be condescending as fuck to a total stranger whom you know nothing about.

Yeah 45º would make sense if he were peeking, but this is fucking stupid. And better to peek the other way, since he's a righty. I guess they thought that wouldn't look cool enough. Fucking dorks.
010
Chokely Carmichael🥋 @stewartcoles.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I thought about that, and even still, since he's clearly a righty, it would make more sense to peek the other way rather than contort his body like that. I refuse to watch the movie just to find out whether this was the best way to engage the target, when it all boils down to wanting to look cool.

Chokely Carmichael🥋 @stewartcoles.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Yes I know that, I did 10 years in the Marines. We (and the screenwriters) can invent some scenario in which this was the optimal way to fire the weapon, but it really boils down "Looks cool."

Whenever I teach #CMN425 Entertainment and Politics, I bring up how BHD was made pre-9/11, not afterward to drum up the war effort. The impulse was already there. That said, my own research shows that for TV, Middle Easterners were almost invisible pre-9/11, then terrorists 1/2 the time afterwards.
