@mrjamesob.bsky.social Loved Burnham's nod to you today. What was really clever though, was he effectively set out his 2nd term. Frees him from the manifesto without needing to call an early election.

Andy Burnham's instincts and goals appear to be very good. Just straight forward soft left policies. The country will be far better if this works out. The problem will be paying for this programme. In a decade or so, the economy would certainly be improved. But how to get from here to there?

New research shows that more people abandoned Labour because they were too tough on immigration - and because of their support for Israel - than because they were too soft on immigration.

Starmer has to go, and the sooner the better. I'm a soft left social democrat, so should be his core support. The problem is his "rivers of blood" speech, attack on the disabled & pro-Brexit rhetoric just give the message that Farage is right. He's lost the left & pushed the right to Reform. #LABOUR

It’s official - “Nigel Farage is right, don’t vote for him” is a demonstrably awful strategy for Labour. Boosts salience of immigration, costs votes on the left, doesn’t persuade any voters on right (why would they accept a crap knock-off when they can have the original?)

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Is Labour's best chance if winning the next election to make it about Brexit? Accept that Farage has the reactionary 25%. Pin Brexit on him. Say that winter fuel, PIP etc were forced by the economic realities of Brexit. Vote Labour to rejoin SM & CU to rebuild UK. #BREXIT

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social People vote Labour, join Labour, become Labour councillors, and become Labour MPs because they believe in social justice. Keir Starmer must understand that ultimately, party stakeholders will not allow policies that make life intolerable for the vulnerable. #Labour

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social You simply cannot go ahead with the cruel plan to cut disability benefits. It is immoral and will destroy the party. You will be unable to govern without your core support.

People wonder why I’m so angry at Labour. It’s because their kamikaze mission to appease the far right by being continuity Tory instead of the change they promised, is haemorrhaging support (obviously) and will result in Farage as PM. I mean, for fucks sake. Sort your shit out and stop it now 👇🏼

Labour's immigration announcement today is a reflection of the paucity of honest debate by BOTH political parties over the last decade on this issue. Labour has never made a counter-argument, or been honest about economic cost of immigration curbs, so it's stuck making Tory/Reform arguments 1/n

This chart from Immigration White Paper illustrates quality of government's underlying "analysis." 1. Numbers are completely wrong (in fact non-EU employment in health/care rose by over 100K). 2. Doesn't say what time period this is. 3. Footnote to source says data is from OECD (it's from HMRC)

I hope that Labour now stop trying to appease Reform. The way forward is to consistently point out their propaganda lies and highlight what effects Reform policies would have on people's lives. They need to relax the fiscal rules, drive through a social democratic programme and make lives better.

Right wing populist politics has been so damaging and so brain-achingly tedious this last decade. Look at where we are as a result. Far poorer, weaker, more divided, isolated from the EU and trying not to piss off an egomaniacal lunatic in the White House. Sovereignty at its most vulnerable.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Trump is trying to ramp up inflation. The Fed will respond by hiking interest rates. Trump will make a fortune in interest from his billions. He'll also bring in emergency tax rules to 'stimulate' the economy & exempt billionaires from tax. It's about making money for Trump.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social WW2 brought unimaginable suffering to millions. Yet, that suffering would have been worse if Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Hirohito had been left to carve up the world. Trump is copying Hitler in 1933. Who will stop Trump, Putin and Xi?

1/2 My view on potential welfare cuts: If a government drives people who are unwell into exploitative and insecure work, the illness doesn’t go away. We'll see more people on waiting lists, visiting food banks, & pushed into services that are past breaking point. www.bigissue.com/news/social-...

How scary is politics now? Starmer is struggling to get his message across - a combination of a horrendous economic situation & a lack of political nous. If Starmer fails, he'll be replaced by hard right Tories who will destroy the welfare state or actual Reform fascists who will likely start a war.

Tax is good. It pays for things we need; transport, health care, education, policing, street cleaning, firefighters, pensions...etc. Lower taxes mean these services get worse. Unless you are rich, lower taxes cost you money as combined buying power is more efficient than buying services privately.

What should Starmer do. He's in a horrible position. Austerity has destroyed the country's infrastructure. Consequently, productivity and growth are very low. Covid (exacerbated by Tory corruption) depleted the reserves and Brexit destroyed inward investment. The economy needs a boost.

Do CAMHS actually make things worse? It's taken 4 years to get an autism assessment and an EHCP granted, although not yet actually drafted for my autistic child. There's been school refusal, self-harm, and depression along the way, but the GP won't get involved as it's CAMH's responsibility.

If Starmer doesn't achieve significant growth before the next general election, the populist media will have him on toast. A fiscally moderate course isn't going to cut it. His choice is to borrow more for a Keynesian boost or rejoin the single market and customs union...or it'll be Farage as PM.

The problem with Trump isn't so much him - his ideology is pro-Trump. Not good for US minorities or Ukrainians, but probably not going to invade anywhere. The issue is, he's shown that the best liar wins...which threatens the very basis of democracy and gives proper Fascists and Nazis a road map.
