It was, as Darth says, a complete surprise, although… Soviet foreign minister Molotov did describe Poland as “ugly offspring of Versailles treaty” after carving it up in 1939. Unimaginable that the right to exist of an established independent state would be challenged by military force today

Oh thank you @bronwenmanby.bsky.social for the shoutout! — And yes I love Belarusian creativity in impossible circumstances including fab clapping story referenced by @doctorow.pluralistic.net (Working title for Street Spirit was “Forbidden Applause”…). Surreal & courageous at same time…

As this careful post from Ukraine’s foreign minister implies, difficult conversations are happening in Kyiv („we do that to our allies, wt*?!”) as well as between PM’s & prez office in Warsaw

German, Polish, Japanese now out, with Arabic & others to come. Now… updated US edition of Prosecuting the Powerful, happy for that. Crazy Guy in DC (& his friends) makes sure themes stay relevant, for sure

I loved seeing this slogan on a prominent shelf (a gift from her ICC colleagues) when I met the court’s ex-chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda. She has lived the slogan in recent days, calling on governments to stand up against those who think trampling justice is a good idea (spoiler: it’s not)

Excited & honoured to be working with @hakusuisha.bsky.social on Japanese publication of Prosecuting the Powerful. — can there be a more important moment for discussing these themes?

The degrees of failure are surreal. eg @nytimes consciously downplays Trump’s deranged „open the Fuckin’ Strait” line — merely „Trump escalates threat” as if all is normal. But… you can’t run away from insanity. Looking at newspapers in 1938 and early 1939 — too many parallels

Fab image, Rostock 2007!, on a creative-protest book cover of mine in… 2016, by Fabien Bimmer @apnews.com

Well that’s something I didn’t expect to experience again soon. To stand in a huge Russian crowd and feel not discomfort but warmth — for a sold-out Russian-only #QEH performance of fab comedy with 86-year-old “foreign agent” star Lia Akhedzhakova, standing ovations. Non-Putin Russias do exist…

… and the other way round also. It’s funny that only when you have finished your book and start talking about it do you make new discoveries about what drove it all along

I’m not sure I’ve had this POV before, as seen from Daunts historic balcony

It exists!, it’s a real book — after two years travelling & writing and accumulated journalistic travels & human rights advocacy before that. Coming to a bookshop near you soon. Renewed thanks to so many. Feeling the nerves, as always. 6 February, watch this space.

It seems to say Krosno on the back? — which had a big battle in 1915 and in 19th century looked like this

Looks great!, look forward, thanks for superb reporting. On the smallest of serendipities (am guessing you weren’t aware, or honoured if so…) — same publishers published book of mine with very similar title many years ago. A time when tentative hope still seemed possible, despite everything

Just sorting through pictures from visits to Ukraine in past two years, and was reminded of this fab poster, on Kyiv’s Khreshchatyk Street. May it become real one day — for Putin, for Assad and other war criminals, too #justice
