William Penn Foundation offers funding to keep Academy of Natural Sciences museum open
A Drexel spokesperson did not say whether the school had declined the offer, but said, “No proposal has been presented that would provide a permanent, sustainable path forward" for the museum.

We have *six days* left until the Academy of Natural Sciences, North America's oldest Natural History museum, is scheduled to close it's doors. Here are *six reasons* why we cannot - and will not- let that happen.

🚨🚨 1. New preprint! We examine whether the diversity of transcontinental freshwater fish radiations, such as killifishes and cichlids, might be driven by marine ancestry in the aftermath of an asteroid impact! Retained salinity tolerance explains their biogeography and diversity!

This paper was inspired by a grad student in Japan who asked me a question during my seminar back in 2023, and the question stuck with me. The paper is also special to me because I got to include the largest fish that I’ve ever collected in the dataset; a 250 lb blue marlin!!

These results suggest that modularity provided the skull with a flexible toolkit to adapt to different habitat conditions allowing one group to change one set of traits while another group changed a different set. Together this produced a rapid and diverse radiation of fishes that we see today (5/n)

Kory Evans Ph.D @sternarchella.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Interestingly we find that different habitat groups used different modules during their diversification. Pelagic predators changed their jaws, while benthic fishes changed their braincases. (4/n)

And while we know that the radiation happened quickly, we didn’t know how the morphology evolved to track transitions into different habitat groups. The first thing we find is that the skull organized itself into four modules based on function and that these modules evolved at different rates (3/n)

Basically the Carangaria are a bizarre clade of fishes that feature some really charismatic guys. Barracudas, mahi mahis, swordfish and of course flatfishes. We learned recently that this group rapidly evolved following the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinos (2/n)

Selection, constraints, and contingency drive mosaic patterns of evolution during the carangarian adaptive radiation
Adaptive radiations generate remarkable morphological diversity, yet traits often diversify at different rates and modes, producing mosaic patterns of evolution. Modularity, the semiautonomous organization of traits, can shape how selection and ...

Hundreds of thousands of bats emerge from a large Mexican-free tailed colony in East Texas. The bats gave us a spectacular show with plenty of daylight left, emerging about 20 minutes before sunset 🦇
Bats blanket the sky, swarming out of a dark recess in a brick building.Bats get their bearings close to the emergence point, in a dense cloud, seemingly bumping into each other as they fly
