i sort of just come up with the designs as i go along with the spriting process, no drawing beforehand. i think it's been a good method thus far but i am going back and getting annoyed whenever i can never decide if something is too boring or too designed and i just hit myself with a cartoon hammer

you do start to recognize how tiles are usually placed in relation to each other as you progress. looking out for when tiles connect to walls & paying attention to how moving platforms overlap each other are some pretty big ones in aiding depth perception. it'd be a very different game with shadows

depth perception is definitely the crux of landstalker's challenge. but i don't think it's bad design as i sort of view it as the game's own unique way of testing the player when it comes to them being able to read their own design language almost how people talk about zelda 1 with its overworld

landstalker is just. really special. stupid yet extremely charming is how i'd describe almost everything in the game. its in-game artstyle and its really hilarious yet indirect sense of humor. it hardly ever delivers jokes through dialogue it just lets you experience it through its gameplay

areas are too condensed in this game for backtracking to even be a problem but knowing about the tree teleport system makes things even easier. being more aware of the items and upgrades in general was just something i hardly paid attention to. i think climax just had the adventure game sauce

beat landstalker. easy top 10 for the md. it fucked me up how much all the tedium & struggle ceases to exist as soon as a second playthrough. making sure to get enough life stocks to increase your damage across the game alone solves most of the issue. spent almost 20 hours but i wish it were longer.
