Man to Man theatre review — Tilda Swinton makes a triumphant return to the stage
Revisiting a part she first played almost 40 years ago at London’s Royal Court, the actor is riveting as a woman enduring Germany’s chaotic 20th century

Tilda Swinton is truly astounding in Man to Man. Widowed in Germany in the 1930s she takes on her husband’s identity to survive war, poverty and political threat. Intensely physical and perfectly paced. It ends chillingly in the present day with the reemergence of the far right. Superb.

'Man to Man' at The Royal Court Theatre. Extraordinary. Tilda Swinton is jagged and broken and grotesque as a woman in 1930s Germany doing whatever is necessary to survive. Completely and utterly brilliant. Divinely directed by @stephenunwin.bsky.social. (No relation, sadly.)

Man To Man – Royal Court Theatre, London
Born in 1938 Brandenberg, writer Manfred Karge had a front row seat to the post-World War II Cold War, and the dividing of Germany into East and West. Set during Germany’s Great Depression, when one in three workers lost their jobs, the play was inspired by the true story of Ella Gericke, a German woman who, took over her husband’s identity on his death for economic reasons. Tilda Swinton takes on the dual role of Ella, and Ella assuming the character of her husband Max Gericke. Karge put pen to paper in 1982, with the play written in German entitled ‘Jacke Wie Hose’, which was then translated into English by Anthony Vivis, and it is this translation that director Stephen Unwin and team have developed, and is the basis for the play that we see today.
