these are self-inflicted wounds. i'm not petty or vindictive. that said: why would i tell my representatives to support a bill that aids a constituency that hasn't just acted against its own interests, but tends as a bloc to support a malign actor who is intent on harming me + people i care about?
But the fate of the farm bill remains uncertain, along with the future of its programs and funding that are essential to the agricultural industry, as farmers are squeezed financially by tariffs, higher input prices — including major cost increases for diesel and fertilizer prices — and extreme weather and drought.

just so
Who has a right to exist? The Trans athlete case and the birthright citizenship case and the TPS expulsion case and the religious liberty cases are ALL THE SAME CASE. They are all, at their core, a judgement on who can be allowed to exist in our society, pitting the liberal “well, of course every individual has value” against the reactionary caste system that lumps people into categories of acceptability.

Lame-Duck Republicans Who Don’t Owe Trump Anything

Washington Post: “One by one, Trump is putting an end to the political careers of lawmakers in his party that he deems, for reasons more personal than policy-oriented, to be apostates. But in doing so, he may also be liberating them as they serve out their remaining seven months in Congress. They now have nothing to lose if they stand up against him.”

George Santos Floats Comeback Against Ilhan Omar
April 22, 2026 at 4:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 77 Comments

Former Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who was expelled from Congress, floated the idea of running in 2028 to oust Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), the Daily Beast reports.

Said Santos: “Think I can’t win? Try me, my life is an open book and I’ll take aim at any seat and primary someone out just to prove a point, the American people rather vote for someone who is open about their life and past and seeking truth than someone who is shady and full of secrets.”

Graham Says Trump Is Planning ‘Overwhelming’ Attack
April 4, 2026 at 3:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 464 Comments

After a phone call with President Trump, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Iran will be facing “overwhelming military force” if they do not give in to U.S. demands.

Said Graham: “I am completely convinced that he will use overwhelming military force against the regime if they continue to impede the Strait of Hormuz and refuse a diplomatic solution to achieve our military objectives. If it’s not clear to Iran and others by now that President Trump means what he says then I don’t know when it will ever be.”

elite media's autopsy might start with this excerpt. biden is said to be "sullen" + to mispronounce alex pretti's name. (trump would be described as "defiant.") plus elite media routinely sanewashes (/ignores) the torrent of gibberish + malapropisms that cascades from the cloaca trump calls a mouth.
Biden grew sullen as he spoke of the surge of immigration agents in Minnesota that resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

“My friends, I can’t sugarcoat this,” Biden said. “These are dark days.”

And he hit Trump for ignoring those violent events in Minnesota during the State of the Union.

“He doesn’t mention Renee Good, Alex Pretti, who were killed by Minnesota ICE — in Minnesota by ICE — offer even a word of solace to their families,” Biden said, appearing to mispronounce Pretti’s last name. “He doesn’t offer a word of support, even recognition to Epstein’s victims sitting in front of him. During the entire time he never acknowledged them.”

likely the first time mcLaughlin has ever used the term "inequities;" possibly coincides with her discovery of the concept.
The Secret Service will soon offer each agent who graduates from protective detail training two tailored suits, according to sources familiar with the matter and a public contract solicitation. The initiative to have the Secret Service purchase suits happened because Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem disliked how a protective detail was dressed in the suits they bought for themselves, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN.”

“DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin denied that account, telling CNN, ‘This does not have to do with optics’ but aims to fix inequities for the ‘men and woman who are just starting their career.’

it used to be that 'lynchpin' was a kind of backdoored spelling of 'linchpin.' a corrupted variant that (b/c of its frequent occurrence) got legitimized as a secondary spelling. i feel as if this arrangement is now inverted--as if modern editors seem okay with this? the example is from @slate.com
My friend recently told me a story over drinks that I haven’t been able to get out of my head. Her two friends, let’s call them Alice and Bob, were something of a lynchpin couple in her friend group. They’d been dating for a few years and moved in together almost immediately. Everyone knew them as an item that did pretty much everything together. Alice and Bob were more like AliceandBob, really.

pasting this apropos of nothing whatsoever
“The consequences are notorious, but they deserve emphasis: between 1918 and 1922, assassinations traced to left-wing elements numbered twenty-two; of these, seventeen were rigorously punished, ten with the death penalty. Right-wing extremists, on the other hand, found the courts sympathetic: of the 354 murders committed by them, only one was rigorously punished, and not even that by the death penalty. The average prison sentences handed out to these political murderers reflect the same bias: fifteen years for the left, four months for the right. Right-wing putschists like Kapp, who had tried to overthrow the Republic by force and violence—his associates committed several revolting murders—were acquitted, freed on a technicality, or allowed to escape abroad. After the Hitler-Ludendorff Putsch of November 1923 failed, the trial of the putschists was degraded into a political farce; the court permitted the accused and their lawyers to insult the government in the most offensive and incendiary language and finally convicted Hitler to five years of Festungshaft, a comfortable form of detention of which, in any event, he served less than a year. The Feme murders committed by members of illegal "defense organizations," paramilitary vigilante groups, belong to the most atrocious crimes in a century filled with atrocities.” – Peter Gay, Weimar Culture, p. 20

conservative scotus justices to this spokesperson for the department of homeland security: hold my beer.
"Maybe I wasn't clear yesterday; that wasn't a suggestion," [Judge Sara Ellis] told lawyers for the Trump administration. "I am modifying the temporary restraining order to include body-worn cameras."

"It's not up for debate," she added.

Federal agents at large wear body cameras but federal agents in Chicago have not been.

"This was not a suggestion," Ellis said in court. "It wasn't a hint. It wasn't a topic of discussion or conversation. It was an order. So, I will enter it today and then I will expect that it will be followed."

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security called the ruling an "extreme act of judicial activism."

i feel seen
A lot of the weirdness of press coverage of the current Democratic party, its goals, its abilities and its future get resolved if you have a clear set of definitions about who and what the Democratic party actually is. More primaries the better. Basically every poll you see with the public standing of the Democratic party at an historic low is based on Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who are fed up with the party because they see it as ineffective and weak. That is about the elected leadership. And that anger and realization is a good thing not a bad thing because it shows that voters aren’t satisfied with the current party, the current elected leadership. They are, as they say, looking to go in another direction. And that’s great.

Unhighlighted text:

The bad economic data could hang over Trump’s meeting with more than two dozen business leaders at the White House later Wednesday.

Highlighted text:

And his blame-casting in response to the reports could trip up his recent efforts to take credit for what he asserts are a slew of positive economic developments.

Unhighlighted text resumes:

For example, in a speech Tuesday evening celebrating the 100th day of his second presidential term, Trump boasted that “prices are coming way down,” claiming, “that’s what I’ve done.”

In fact, the latest GDP report showed the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, sharply increasing by 3.6% in Q1, up from the 2.4% rise in the prior quarter.
