Not sure how this lands; I came for the smut but stayed for the transport. I did take a date on a walking tour of the transport highlights of a major city I formerly worked in. Relationship didn't go anywhere, but she did use the knowledge in her own professional black history walking tours.

Absolutely, we can blame women. Give those silly women access to education, employment, and contraception, and some of them decide not to be baby factories. How dare they have the audacity to believe they should have autonomy over their own bodies! [/sarcasm]

What I'm very uncomfortable about is that humans are actually willing to give bits of software real agency. We have done that in a very limited form for decades (e.g. dynamic traffic signal timings), but there is the real possibility that someone forgets to put in the guardrails.

Are they edible (more than once)? I was always told (UK context) never to eat red berries and as for random fungi ...

Was about to say that looks like the Midland Hotel in Morecambe, then read the alt text. My Grandma had her 80th birthday there. Sheesh, that would have been about 40 years ago...

Whilst I kinda worked that out myself about 20 years ago, I only actually started to believe it maybe 2 years ago. The good news is that it does actually work (and I'm a fuck ton happier too).

Apple harvest 2026 is coming along nicely. Should be read for pressing early October as a lot of apples still on trees.
Two raised vegetable beds covered with planks with hundreds of apples on top of them.

I spent last week visiting various sites of the Roman Empire in Zaragoza, Nîmes, Dijon and Strasbourg by train with Australian archaeologist Kate Clark @katecheritage.bsky.social. It was great fun; never thought to make a TV series out of it 😂.

I spent 8 years living in a village in the middle of nowhere not far from an immigration detention centre. On one evening I was locking up the pub (for clarity I worked there I hadn’t just broken into it) Two men appeared from the pub car park shadows. They were walking slowly towards me

Directly or indirectly? The former, I don't know, but the latter ... have a read of Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari. Various credible scenarios in there.

Travelling with a friend, an Eurail ticket was cheaper than the Interrail ticket. I'm guessing that the merger means that Interrail tickets have been reduced to the Eurail cost? 🐖🪽

Is this question geared only towards women wanting sex with a man, or is it more generic?

Would you prefer to have tough choices on what to run, or no choice as you've got no power to operate anything at all? I'd rather have the tough choices, thanks.

Absolutely. I am 100% in support of Dutch quality cycling infrastructure both within and connecting all communities.

Stephen Cragg @stephencragg.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
FTAOD, I am a 100% supporter of having Dutch standard cycling infrastructure everywhere. It creates many wonderful benefits for everyone. I'm just observing that in and of itself, it has a marginal impact on car use. It is not the magic bullet that people hope it is for that specific objective.

Stephen Cragg @stephencragg.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
If you consider the carbon needed to provide the fabulous cycle infrastructure in the Netherlands ... It does also make for so many other wonderful benefits too (particularly health and place), but I don't know if, in and of itself, it is providing a net carbon reduction.

Stephen Cragg @stephencragg.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Sorry to be 'that guy', but that assumes that every km cycled is a km of car travel that no longer happens. My understanding is that the Dutch still drive just as much as people in the rest of Europe; they just cycle more too.

Last year was a very good year and I've still got 40l in demijohns still waiting for bottling. This year looks like another good year. This far north, my pressing is usually late October. Will be interesting to see if the hotter summer brings that forward.

Was going to say the same. Very deserved Oscar winner too. However, it only squeaks 1st place for me. Mice follies from the previous year is a damn close 2nd place for me.

Had read a little of Dawkins and then my ex introduced me to Stephen Jay Gould's books. IMO, he is one of the greatest non-fiction authors of all time. Hmm, it's at least 20 years since I read them. I think a walk down to the bookshop this afternoon is now on the cards.

First job, mid 80s, I was the primary photocopier boy. Others knew how to use it. When management wanted an upgrade, all the photocopier salesmen had to demonstrate their product to me and the directors asked 17 year old me for my opinion on which to buy (or possibly rent - didn't do the finance).

If your objective is to reduce car traffic, then yes it does. Easy to say, often very challenging to do. Carrots are politically cheap but financially expensive. Sticks are financially cheap but politically expensive. Tends to be more doable in cities with low % of non car owning households.

I am a fan of making Public Transport free. The poorest in society do not have cars. However, only making PT free has virtually no impact on the volume of car traffic. It has been done in many cities with the same outcome. Even with no fare, car drivers still see PT as poorer "value" than driving 🙁.

The saying I heard goes you can put a boat on a ship, but not a ship on a boat. Hence, ships have lifeboats, but boats don't have lifeships.

IMO, works irrespective of gender too. Being somewhat parochial, there are a wide variety of Scottish accents. Within those, they also improve as latitude increases. So that no-one claims I say this because I'm from the North of Scotland, my accent is very much Northern English.

Memories of schooldays in the 1980s when many girls in my year did the same to reduce the impact of almost certain sexual assault. I am forever ashamed that I was a bystander, not an ally.

For a question of this importance, I would be looking to Randall Monroe @xkcd.com for the theoretical answer and someone like Adam Savage (Mythbusters) to then do the empirical approach.

A common myth in the UK at least. Sometimes people see the detectors on top of the lights and think they detect light. As a result drivers will flash their lights. When they see the lights change as a result their belief is confirmed. However, they simply detect movement.

From 1925: a prediction that, as more people choose to drive to the countryside, cars will end up destroying the very beauty that people go to see.
This is a satirical cartoon titled "Motoring and Our Beautiful Countryside" by W.K. Haselden, published in 1925.It highlights the irony of motorists destroying the very scenic beauty they drive out to see by demanding infrastructure improvements. The panels demonstrate a progression from idyllic country lanes to suburban sprawl, with the final panel depicting a dystopian landscape dominated by wide roads and minimal greenery.
