All we can say on this side of the Tasman is that the Australian official histories are a lot closer to being released than New Zealand’s because we have not even made a start on an official history of any NZ military involvement since the Vietnam War. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

110 years ago today the New Zealand Division launched its first attack on the Somme during the First World War in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. My great grandfather 3/1742 Sgt Teddy Dillion 3 NZ Field Ambulance was there and his diary entry simply concludes, “It was Hellish.”
