Coming on top of the axing of The World Tonight it really seems as if #BBC are determined to wreck R4. Especially depressing that Thinking Allowed will go - SFAIK it's the only programme in UK media dedicated to (mainly academic) social science research. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

There’s another option, shorter term: re-open Ebbsfleet or Ashford instead, and use Javelin trains as connections (with integrated ticketing thanks to GBR?) to join those up But there, just as in Stratford, you also need to pay border staff

Badenoch claims £2,700 a month from the taxpayer to rent a grade II-listed farmhouse with six bedrooms. The property sits within the highest council tax bracket, costing over £4,000 in council tax a year, which the Essex MP also claims on expenses. "Best welfare" is being an MP.

Re the debate on the cliff edge where tax-free childcare is lost at £100k leading to people keeping their income below this amount, it’s obvious that such cliff edges are bad as it skews decisions about work – no-one should be worse off if their earnings increase. /1 🧵

I was presuming the NI element wouldn’t change but hadn’t realised the “62%“ from 100K included the NI bit. I was throwing out the 47%(+2) from 100K, but recognise it may need to be higher depending on employee no.s in the 100-125 band vs no.s the 125+ band.

I wonder, if the top level was moved down to 100K, how much it would have to be raised to recoup the 62% currently received on the 100-125K range, given that it would apply all the way up from 100K? 47, 48%?

Stephen Drennan @stephen1958.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I would think the numbers affected by the simple 62% at £100K would be significantly higher, even though everyone is focusing on the childcare aspect.

Today we are able to see the contradiction of oil pricing as a result of the new systems created by #TheHormuzCrisis. More oil is moving and futures have eased. Yet petrol and diesel prices at the pump remain high. This is a sign of things to come in the new global systems if not fixed.

France has a glut of very good WWII films out at the moment, but I've been really struck by the fact that these are not really about the 1940s at all, they're about modern politics as France faces the possibility of its first far-right government since Vichy
