Loved Edge-Lit yesterday. Especially as the wonderful Kayleigh Dobbs introduced me to favourite writer, Thomas Olde Heuvelt. (Totally fangirling in pic 😆 but I don't care). Darker Days is so good, you should all read it.

1876 Stories of a Vintage Year is now available as both ebook and print. Stories guaranteed to teach a little of Wrexham's amazing history - and raise money for Wrexham's Carnival of Words mybook.to/1876 #booksky #Wrexham #historicalfiction
Today's snippet is from 'The Sound of Darkness' by Samantha Maxwell:

I lifted my heel and tapped it gently against the
floorboards. The leather made a hollow sound. ‘See these
boots,’ I said. ‘They weren’t always like this. Once they were
thick pit boots. Hard soles. Built to keep the ground out.’
I felt Tomos’s fingers press down on the worn leather.
‘So, why’d you change them?’
‘Because thick boots shut the world away. Thin ones
let it speak.’

On the right is a statue of a miner in Wrexham. On the left, below the snippet, the book 1876 with a red dragon.

Snippet from Marie Anne Cope's 'Prelude':
Now, I’m not blaming them for what happened next, but I do feel some responsibility should lie at their door. Maybe that’s why no one was ever told the truth about that exhibition and what visitors saw there that bright August day. All I know is that I scoured the papers in the days that followed, as we waited to depart, and nothing was written about the late additions to the exhibition. Not … one … word!

Christmas at Dinas, eight years earlier. William had
been nineteen, just lost his tada, and the family had been
hoping for better fortune, when the black-faced Leader, Y
Arweinydd, had brought the sheet-draped horse’s head and
his party—the Merryman with his fiddle, and all the rest—
to hammer on their door.
William’s mother, still grieving the loss of her
husband, had opened the door to them, and the Leader
had sung his song.
