Thursday morning update from Ryan Perrault, Ottawa's GM of Emergency & Protective Services. Hardest-hit areas are in Ottawa West: - Ward 7 (Bay) - Ward 8 (College) - Ward 9 (Knoxdale-Merivale)
Mayor Sutcliffe and Members of Council,

I wanted to provide a further update on the City's response following yesterday's severe thunderstorms.

While many residents continue to deal with the impacts of the storm, including power outages, flooding, downed trees, and debris, City crews have made significant progress overnight and throughout today in responding to priority issues and restoring services. We remain in Enhanced Operations as our Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) continues to manage the City's response across the community. At the same time, the City continues to be under an Environment and Climate Change Canada heat alert, and we are adapting our response to help residents safely manage both the ongoing impacts of the storm and the current extreme temperatures.

The highest number of requests for service continue to come from Ward 8 (College), Ward 7 (Bay), and Ward 9 (Knoxdale-Merivale). Resources remain focused on these communities, while ensuring response efforts continue across the city based on public safety and operational priorities.

Recognizing that some residents remain without power, recreation facilities with pools in the most impacted areas will also provide access to showers to help residents stay safe and comfortable during the heat event. Updated information on participating facilities and hours of operation is available on ottawa.ca. Residents can also use Ottawa Public Health's interactive map on the Extreme Heat and Humidity - Ottawa Public Health webpage to locate cooling options and other places to find relief close to home. Our crews have made significant progress in clearing roads, addressing traffic disruptions, responding to blocked sewer basins, and managing other storm-related impacts. We have upstaffed across several service areas to accelerate response efforts and restore services as quickly and safely as possible. Work also continues to address downed trees throughout the city. Crews are prioritizing trees that pose an immediate risk to public safety, including those blocking roads or affecting emergency vehicle access. Information on response priorities and reporting downed trees is available on ottawa.ca. We continue to work closely with Hydro Ottawa and our other partners to assess community needs related to ongoing power outages. Restoration efforts continue to make progress, and we remain coordinated in supporting affected residents and responding to emerging needs as they arise.

Information for residents, including updates on storm impacts, service disruptions, road closures, and safety information, is being updated regularly on ottawa.ca and through the City's other communication channels. Residents are encouraged to report non-emergency issues, including basement flooding, through 3-1-1, with online reporting preferred where possible to help manage call volumes. As always, residents should call 9-1-1 if they are experiencing an emergency or an immediate threat to life or safety.

I want to thank residents for their continued patience, cooperation, and support as recovery efforts continue. I also want to recognize the outstanding work of City staff, our emergency services, Hydro Ottawa, Hydro One, partner agencies, and everyone working to restore services and support our communities. We will continue to provide updates as recovery progresses and remain focused on keeping residents safe and helping our community recover together.

Thank you for your continued support in sharing important information with residents.

Hope everyone is okay. Here is a list of who to call to report downed trees and flooded basements. Check in on your neighbours. Fingers crossed that the worst of the storm is over now …
We’re seeing heavy rain that’s causing flooding, downed trees, power outages, and road closures. Please avoid flooded roads and underpasses, and stay clear of downed trees and power lines.

Call 3-1-1 or make a report online if…
➡️ Water is entering your home
➡️ You see a downed tree or other debris in the road and it is not impacting a power line
➡️ You see a flooded roadway

Call 613-738-0188 (Hydro Ottawa) if…
➡️ You need to report a power outage

Call 9-1-1 if…
➡️ You see a downed tree impacting a power line
➡️ You are experiencing a medical emergency

For updates and information on what to do if you’re experiencing flooding, visit Ottawa.ca/flooding.

Remember to check in on your friends, family, and neighbours to make sure they are safe.

To all of the community associations and volunteers who put their all into organizing Canada Day events today, thank you. Even though Mother Nature had other plans, your hard work has not gone unnoticed.
