A few scenes from my upcoming nature documentary. Set in Teesdale in the North Pennines, the film will take the viewer on a journey through the seasons, meeting some of the wildlife and highlighting how natural forces and of course humans have shaped this landscape. youtu.be/IbZs_tqZ_3M?...

The River Caldew in Cumbria yesterday. Very unusual to see the bedrock exposed like this - very, very worrying. And it's only halfway though May...😟 #drought #LakeDistrict #Cumbria
The river bed of the River Caldew in Cumbria yesterday. The flow of water has simply stopped, revealing its limestone bedrock -just like the clints and grykes characteristic of a limestone pavement. This is a river which is regularly in spate in the wetter months, when it can be quite destructive But it is very sad to see it in this emaciated state. The trees in the background are still green, but they too will suffer if we don't get some decent rainfall soon.

Spectacular aurora above the North Pennines a year ago today
A sequence of images of the Northern Lights above the air traffic control infrastructure on the summit of Great Dun Fell in the North Pennines of Cumbria. This was one of the most spectacular aurora displays in the UK for decades and the vivid colours were amazing - shades of purple, magenta, green, red and blue - all were present. A bonus moonset was the icing on the cake!

Glancing light on limestone pavement beneath cloud-capped Wild Boar Fell #landscapephotography
In the foreground the texture of the limestone pavement is highlighted by glancing rays of warm sunlight. In the distance you can see the slopes of Wild Boar Fell, still under a blanket of cloud. A blissfully peaceful part of the superb walking country that is the Westmorland Dales.

Monkey On My Back’ - look closely and compare the two. See Alt text for the amusing (i think) back-story.
Our local herd of fell ponies on Helton Fell on Sunday morning. Could this be the first photographic record of a monkey riding on horseback in the Lake District, or is it evidence that Adobe’s AI powered ‘Generative Remove’ has a sense of humour?
The second photo shows what the image looked like before I asked it to remove the distracting pair of ears in the background. I’ve no idea where it got the monkey from - I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar failures of artificial intelligence?

Early morning Fly-By for #ShareMondays2025 and #FSprintmonday
A bird in flight cruises above the River Lowther, the surface of the water wreathed in steaming mist. A leafless tree on the right acts as a frame, while in the background clouds of mist burn off in the warm light of the rising sun.

Late evening sun warming what is arguably Long Meg's biggest daughter - one of the main megalith's in Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle, near Glassonby in Cumbria. Meg herself sits in the lush grass outside of the circle and can be seen on the far right watching over her children. Pic from last Tuesday -one of the many glorious blue sky days we have had recently.

Blissfully calm conditions on the River Lowther this morning #landscapephotography
Early morning on the River Lowther shortly after sunrise this morning. A light frost garnishes the grass on the river bank, with a lone tree set against a back drop of mist, warmed by the rising sun. A pair of geese honking loudly as they fly overhead, then silence returned.

Ullswater under a blanket of fog #landscapephotography #LakeDistrict
We had a temperature inversion earlier this week in the Lake District. Foreground trees were still in deep, black shadow, while layers of mist clung tightly to the surface of Ullswater. In the distance, banks of fog blanketed the Eden Valley and the fells of the North Pennines.

Broken home #blackandwhitephotography #monochrome #photography
A derelict farmstead, high up in the North Pennines National Landscape. The image has been rendered in monochrome to better complement the melancholic nature of the scene. In the foreground lies a shattered, wind-battered fence, whose scattered timbers lead the eye to what was once a family home and place of work. Rural depopulation and collapse of domestic infrastructure encapsulated. That is how I see it.

Sometimes the lie of the land seems to influence the shape of the skies above. Here the arc of cloud on the leading edge of an incoming shower seems to mimic the shape of the pointy ridge below. Pic from a dreich day in the Lake District when utter misery was forecasted.

From my search for a bit of light and snow last week - my entry for #fsprintmonday and #ShareMondays2025 See the +ALT text for details
Snow blown across the communications infrastructure situated beneath Great Dun Fell in the North Pennines. A picture of what 'Ice Station Zebra' might look like went though my mind... But back to reality - here the spindrift is backlit by late afternoon sun, which found a gap in the cloud sheet which most will have experienced last week. One of the features of the Helm Wind - a bitter north easterly/east wind notorious in these parts - is to break up the cloud to the lee of Cross Fell. At the top of the image you can see a bar of cloud - another feature of the Helm - which hovered above the comparative darkness of the Eden Valley, several hundred metres below me. In the mid-distance you can see evidence of the former Silverband mine office and a hush reservoir covered by snow and ice. The wind chill was not pleasant!

Birch trees in mono #blackandwhitephotography #landscapephotography
Birch trees on a hillside, lit by the sun against a clear blue sky. However this image has been converted to black and white, and by emulating the use of a red filter in traditional film photography, the blue sky has been rendered almost black, thereby providing a dark background to contrast with the silvery white bark of the trees.

From last month's snow event - an abandoned farm on Alston Moor, in the North Pennines of Cumbria. #landscapephotography #snowhour
Abandoned farm buildings on Alston Moor. The roof of the farmhouse has either collapsed, or perhaps has been damaged by some sort of impact? Groups of leggy trees lurk suspiciously on both flanks. The field in the foreground is bright white, under a blanket of sunlit snow. Flecks of light catch the tops of distant fells, beneath a leaden sky.

Synchronised munching. More info in +Alt text. #ShareMondays #FSPrintMonday
A row of three white ponies eating grass in perfect harmony. I came across these beautiful animals while out walking on the fells above Ullswater in the Lake District on Wednesday, and had the great pleasure of spending time in their company. Patience has its rewards - after about half an hour they had became quite used to my presence and concentrated more on eating grass, rather than concerning themselves about why some strange person was sat on the grass pointing a camera at them. And they even lined up for me!
