83 to go. The Canadiens open their season with a mature effort. It wasn’t spectacular but it was an intelligent road game. The win in Toronto in the season opener of the Call Of The Wilde for Global Montreal globalnews.ca/news/1207663...

Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens start the season with a tight victory over the Maple Leafs in Toronto - Montreal | Globalnews.ca
The Montreal Canadiens drew the Maple Leafs in Toronto and it was a match-up that Montreal has struggled with, but not this time. The Canadiens posted a tight 3-2 win.

I know it’s early days, but I really like this aggressive PK. 🤔

The pairing of Xhekaj and Struble can definitely be a liability. Close call there.

Leafs with no answer right now for Montreal’s 4th line. I think that will be a recurring theme this season.

For the umpteenth time, let me ask for your opinion. Do you trust what Gorton and Hughes are doing or not? If not, evidence please. If yes, then accept that there was no good Marchenko deal to be made and that they know what the plan is, even if you and I do not. Just enjoy the ride.

Here’s what Montreal’s 23-man roster looks like. Only one player would need to be cut. From there, it will come down to determining who stays in the lineup, who gets sent down and, perhaps, who gets traded within the first 10 games or so. 1/2

Doug Stein @steindoug.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I don’t think the pre-season is about whether Reinbacher, Engström, F. Xhekaj or Beck make the roster or not. They won’t. The point is, injuries happen and Montreal appears to have incredible depth which cannot be understated. The one thing I’m not sure about is who will be 2G.

I also want to say for the record, that unlike many who were disappointed Mtl wasn’t able to acquire a notable player in the off-season (no disrespect to 22), I am fine with it. I believe those same folks greatly underestimate how much of an impact Mtl’s steadily improving core can have this season.

It’s funny how much some people read into preseason performance, because I don’t at all. That said, it’s still nice to get the wins because, for many, many years, Habs teams didn’t win much in the preseason and it often ended up being a sign of bad things to come.

Doug Stein @steindoug.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Newhook resigned. Will Anderson be next?

One year it is for Xhekaj. Not surprised at all.

Doug Stein @steindoug.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Once Montreal realized that Waddell wasn’t going to budge from the king’s ransom he was demanding for Marchenko, they pivoted to Kreider and then re-upped Bolduc. I’m curious if Xhekaj will get more than one year and at what $ amount.
020
Doug Stein @steindoug.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Sorry but, winning the cup > crying about Kreider.

Doug Stein @steindoug.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Gorton and Hughes proving once again that all we can do is guess and mostly get it wrong. Hope I am wrong about the culture fit too. Habs get a one time 50 goal man, and one of the best net front presences in the league. 😳

Netflix is bad at sports. Really hope they don’t mess with the NHL.

Doug Stein @steindoug.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
1. Kreider will not sign with a Canadian team. 2. He is not a good culture fit for the Habs. 3. Name a player that Hughes/Gorton acquired that anyone predicted beforehand? Come on guys.

When it comes to this Canadiens mgmt team, where there’s smoke, there’s never fire. If you’re reading about potential moves, the odds of them happening, based on history, are pretty much zero. If a trade does occur, we’ll be the last to find out. I have absolutely no issue with this whatsoever.

Nothing doing with Marchenko, and anyway, even if there were, who do you think Montreal is giving up to acquire him? I certainly don’t know, but I can tell you it wouldn’t be insignificant.

I received some not-so-polite comments about this article, suggesting that he isn’t a good head coach. Well, he didn’t have a good team in Detroit. So there’s that. Also, as an assistant, his defensive tactics did make a difference in TB and last season in TO, especially on the PK. Context matters.

After drafting Demidov, Hutson, Slafkovsky, Dobeš and Fowler, this next wave doesn’t need to become stars. If a handful develop into reliable NHL contributors, Montreal’s drafting during the rebuild will have accomplished exactly what it was supposed to do: build a sustainable contender.

After Brière’s reckless disruption of the NHL’s new salary cap, this contract looks even better for Montreal. Carlson will be making twice as much as Demidov. Think about that, and realize how lucky we are to have (more than) competent management in Montreal.
