The move away from teaching phonics to whatever its replacement is/was is interesting. And it certainly seems that the kiddos receive A and B grades simply for showing up. I don't know what's wrong either but its evidence shows up everywhere.

Isn't this a grade school problem, the three Rs? To be accomplished before college. College profs & instructors were never intended to teach such basic skills.

For years, I worked with many much younger co-workers and I was often astounded at how poor their writing skills were. I never considered them unintelligent; it was apparent that they were never taught how to write beyond a very bare minimum. And these were college and grad level folks.

So so many reasons for this. Studio/financial of course, but, writing well, for any format or outcome, be it journalism, academia, story-telling, is just emphasized less than it used to be. Even a poverty row film from the depths of the Depression features better writing than most modern stuff.

Absolutely. I haven't watched it in several years and it still hits perfectly. Also, recently been watching many more modern films/shows and the decline in writing dense and "snappy" dialogue just wallops me when I return to a verbal stunner like #TheUnsuspected.
