Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 02/10/2026I discovered this a couple of years ago, when someone was in my assigned seat and I told the cabin crew. They called their colleague at the front of the plane, and the conversation ended with "6 Delta". So I was sent to 6D, but I made a note to always use the phonetic alphabet in future. 120
Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 02/10/2026It is amazing the (positive) difference in treatment you get from cabin crew simply by using the NATO alphabet when mentioning your seat number ("17 Charlie"). They seem to assume you're ex-aviation industry and know what you're doing. 140

Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 02/10/2026There seems to be something about Facebook, specifically, that makes a lot of posters think that you are in the room with them and know everything that they do about a situation, so they can just ask a completely context-free question and then act surprised when everyone is bewildered. 030
Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 02/10/2026This story is all kinds of awful, like any death penalty case, but having critical-care doctors working hard to restore her to full health so it's then going to be OK for the state to try to kill her again is... whatever's beyond Kafkaesque. www.bbc.com/news/article...bbc.comChrista Pike in critical condition after surviving two lethal injections, lawyer saysPike’s lawyers have asked for her death sentence to be commuted following the botched execution. 76825
Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 02/10/2026Sadly I think "Nobody wants to read all this shit" also applies to a great deal of pre-AI output too. Maybe one of the silver linings of AI is the understanding that we are publishing way too much schmience. 140

Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 02/10/2026Part of my shock at the spread of AI is discovering how many otherwise intelligent people think it's actually cool, and not something to be embarrassed about. Nick Brown @steamtraen.eu · 29/09/2026I suspect that if cars were invented today, given how good modern roads and tyres are, there would be no such thing as a spare, or maybe even a repair kit. There are many other things that are probably more likely to cause a breakdown. (Although with EVs maybe not.) 100
