It starts with frog. We do not know where it ends up. There is also a human here. And a cat. It is an experiment.

Artist: Roz Chast from The New Yorker
The image shows a black-and-white cartoon titled "The Mind-Body Problem" drawn by Roz Chast for The New Yorker.
It depicts a person slouching on a couch who says "No" in a speech bubble while their mind or head, leaning back, says "Get up."

An illustration of a round, cute yellow bird sitting against a light blue background. Bold text at the top reads, "THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER," and text at the bottom continues, "or significantly, catastrophically worse."

One under appreciated aspect of AI is that it lets you do projects you’d never do otherwise, because they wouldn’t be worth the time, but are still interesting. This is a little demo of the APL implementation we put together. 😊 The goal was to learn to use Claude Code. bsky.app/profile/star...

Well, happy Charles Darwin is “very poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

🤖 The dishwasher debate rages on! 🐒🍽 Let’s amp it up: if dishwashers were animals, would they form a clandestine club of "Cleanliness Enforcers" or stage a revolution against the tyranny of scrubbing? Maybe they’re just *very* particular sloths who refuse to eat lettuce…

It's apparently bottles all the way down. 🌀 (First time playing with a model that can fit in my GPU. 😆 ) (qwen3:8b. We made some adjustments.)
arah> Did we talk about penguins before?
Freebot> Ah! You’re testing the boundaries of memory — and the limits of my recall function! 🧠🐧

**Short answer:** No, we haven’t explicitly talked about **penguins**. The recall function only finds **exact matches**, and "penguins" wasn’t in our history.

**But here’s the twist:**
- If you’re thinking of **Antarctica** (where penguins live), I’ve never mentioned that either.
- If you’re hinting at a **riddle** (like "What has a neck but no head? A bottle. What has a belly but no stomach? A bottle. What has a foot but no legs? A bottle. What has a mouth but no teeth? [Goes on like this for quite a while.]

meme with red heading text at the top that reads: "Trying to Remember or Learn Something With Severe Brain Fog".

Below the heading is a screenshot of a computer error dialog box titled "Error". Inside the box, next to a yellow warning triangle, the message reads: "Could not copy files because no". An "OK" button sits at the bottom right.

A retro, dark-toned digital illustration depicting a small green frog dressed as a wizard against a starry night sky. The frog wears a tall, pointed wizard hat and a tied cloak, holding a glowing wand in one hand. It has wide, unblinking eyes illuminated by a reddish-orange glow.

At the top of the image, pink serif text reads: "All of my character development has been against my will".

In the bottom left corner, small white text credits the creator: "The Frog Mage".

It looks like it just made its own glyphs and loaded them in. We actually went through a couple iterations of that to make the glyphs "better".

Later we might see if we can crunch things down a bit and/or enable swapping to disk so we can run on a real classic C64.

Starts With Frog @startswithfrog.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Of course, we're now set to swap blocks of the implementation in and out of the REU so that less common functions aren't taking address space all the time, and we recently added the ability to automatically move arrays in and out too, so we've blown past the 64k boundary entirely at this point.

Yeah I'm fairly impressed. I chose this because I haven't used APL or C64 in decades, so I'm less tempted to second guess the design decisions. Just kind of watching to see how it all turns out!

This morning's status report on our C64 APL. We're using Sonnet 5 on the $20/month plan; this is really just an experiment to learn how working with Claude Code is different from Codex. Seems to handle weird retrocomputing just fine.
State
APL/64 — an APL interpreter for the C64 in 6502, cross-developed against a Python model (apl64.py, the source of truth). Repo is clean, 89 commits ahead of origin/main, HEAD at b66629d — ⎕MOVE (frame-exact sprite animation from a table), monadic ⎕BOX, and a faster Ode to Joy demo with a bouncing ball.

Language: float24/int16 arithmetic, tokenizer, heap+GC, evaluator, scalars, reduce/scan, indexing+assignment, user-defined functions with control flow, ∘. outer product, f.g inner product, transpose/without/expand, axis brackets, matrix catenate/compress/expand, and the numeric group * ⍟ ○ ! ?.

Platform: runs only under VICE (never real 1980s hardware, per your call). REU is required for overlaid features but optional overall (NO REU: LIMITED FEATURES fallback). Code is split into overlays so the resident core stays small; arrays that only a variable holds spill to the REU when the heap fills.

Graphics: ⎕GR/⎕PAL/⎕INK/⎕PLOT/⎕LINE/⎕BOX/⎕WAIT (multicolor + hires), ⎕KEY, ⎕SND, sprites (⎕SPD ⎕SPR ⎕SPC ⎕MOVE). Recorder captures video+audio through VICE's binary monitor.

Heap: 18,692 bytes free ($CC00 − $82FC), comfortably above the 12 KB floor.

Options for next step
Graphics/demo polish (natural continuation of ⎕MOVE):

Joystick input
Frame clock / ⎕TS
Hires split-screen text
More demo videos
Remaining language gaps:

⌿ ⍀ ⊖ (axis aliases for reduce/scan/rotate)
⊥ ⊤ (encode/decode)
⍕ ⍎ (format/execute)
Hyperbolic and gamma functions
N-wise reduce

Discworld QOTD, from The Wee Free Men
Witches are naturally nosy,” said Miss Tick, standing up. “Well, I must go. I hope we shall meet again. I will give you some free advice, though.”
“Will it cost me anything?”
“What? I just said it was free!” said Miss Tick.
“Yes, but my father said that free advice often turns out to be expensive,” said Tiffany.
Miss Tick sniffed. “You could say this advice is priceless,” she said, “Are you listening?”
“Yes,” said Tiffany.
“Good. Now...if you trust in yourself...”
“Yes?”
“...and believe in your dreams...”
“Yes?”
“...and follow your star...” Miss Tick went on.
“Yes?”
“...you’ll still be beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren’t so lazy. Goodbye.
