Like these alternative cover designs...
2 different cover designs for The Inheritors, one a small fire in the centre of big stone, and one a standing hominid brandishing a flaming torch...

This hymn was written by Joachim Neander, after whom the Neander Valley was named. This valley was where Neanderthal 1 was found—but he wasn't called Neanderthal after the valley! Neander means "new man."

It made Arthur Koestler blub. (Well, he said it was moving.)

I've always wanted to pop into the Hoop & Grapes, just on the strength of its wonky windows. Now it's a minute from my (voluntary) workplace—so here I am with a Timothy Taylor Landlord *Dark*, which is a new one on me. V tasty! Noisy punters, sadly. Fancied a *quiet* pint. Ho hum.

Overheard a conversation about Roland the Farter—so of course I joined in. Refreshing to meet such enlightened people! There is hope.

Watched The Blue Bird (Cukor, 1976)... Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Jane Fonda, George Cole, Patsy Kensit, Robert Morley, and Cicely Tyson (who you may know from the cover of Miles's Sorcerer album)! A magical tale for all the family. Jane Fonda wins that film.

There are also good pictures on the walls but it's too dark to see them and now my eyes hurt. Playlist update: Ian Dury.

At Fruitlands, vegetables that grow downwards (carrots, beets, potatoes) are forbidden. And for that reason, I'm out.

In this enchanted mood, thy spirit ebbs away to whence it came; becomes diffused through time and space; like Cranmer’s sprinkled Pantheistic ashes, forming at last a part of every shore the round globe over.

What if I were to invent a fondue set made from pastry?

The wheel: another pretty good idea! Also the domestication of horses... Beer, flax, woad... CHEESE... Why did the fondue set fail to unite humanity? Because some people are lactose intolerant?

Welcome boats. Boats were probably a significant factor in the origin of consciousness. Boats bring earthlings together— unlike borders, walls, flags, and so-called newspapers. I have been in a fair few boats. Imho, the boat was really a first-rate invention—so keep the boats coming, I say.

Conversation with @kirkdalebooks.bsky.social led (via Dr Who and Survivors) to this incredible series. Somehow I intuited even as a child visiting the BM that an Ancient Egyptian model of someone ploughing was one of the most important exhibits of all.
