I once knew someone from Edmonton who said she spent 7 months of the year indoors, either at home or at the mall.

It's going to be startling news to many but you can do 'self-determination' without converting it into a single identity nation-state.

Odd that Ireland isn't included given that we were the ones most affected - politically at least - by Brexit.

They don't even regard them as human, which makes it easier to deny them basic human rights.
Picture of Andrey X above quote:
"If you sit at a hipster café and start talking to a random person, 20 minutes later, this person, drinking a matcha latte and speaking perfect English, will start explaining to you that those Palestinian children will grow up to be terrorists, so it's okay to kill them."

Pat Leahy in 1916: Irish people see the damage caused by the so called rebels and want no part of this treachery.

So much of the southern commentariat view a UI as equivalent to building a granny flat for an indigent and cranky relative. It will not be like that. Northern nationalists, and a section of the unionist population will do a reverse takeover, and the powerbase of FFG will be greatly reduced.

That's not far off 40% of the total death toll during the troubles in the north of Ireland - in a single year.

Horrible flashbacks. In a previous life, I probably saw the majority of those bands without ever wanting to, in the course of work.

I've said it before, but despite the best efforts of govt and the rail companies, train travel works in Britain because of the people who work on the trains and at the stations.

One of the two, a woman travelling to Eccles, was advised there was no step free access there, and that she should get off at Oxford Road and Northern would supply a taxi. When we got there, someone was there to meet her and take here to the taxi rank.

On a Northern train from Salford to Mcr airport. Two people with wheelchairs on board, travelling alone, to different stops and different connections. Absolutely superb coordination between train staff and station staff to make it as easy as possible.

My dad was a soldier and I used to have his sword, but it disappeared somewhere along the way. I still have one belonging to a great uncle who served in the royal navy. Shorter than an army one, for ease of passage on a ship. I keep it in my office to disconcert students.

Definitely. There is a 'type' to his male characters; not very bright, attracted to violence and, as you say, desperate to feel something. And yes, modernist, but in a very different way to the canonical Irish modernists.

I'm reviewing something well written, persuasive, with a strong argument, based on a premiss that is - to my mind - completely constructed in order to serve the argument.

Have been a regular for ~35 years at Lansdowne but couldn’t stomach it this evening. None of us took our season ticket seats. Would have enjoyed seeing that goal live but struggling to articulate how we feel about this team. It was good to see the protest there despite RTÉ cutting away a lot.

So Celtic player Liam Scales is back in for Ireland against Austria. It would be great to ask him if he refused to play against Israel, but journalists can't, because the players are refusing to speak to the media. I don't think people realise how serious this is. #StopTheGame

Sure. I do think the perpetual nostalgia-bug in British politics, left and right, needs to be removed. There is no 'there' to go back to. One of the things I do prefer about Ireland is the fact that most people know from their family histories that the past was generally pretty shit.
