This mesmerizing timelapse captures the nonstop motion inside an animal cell. Red/orange streaks are the growing ends of microtubules, tiny “highways” that can rapidly assemble and disassemble to move proteins & other molecules within the cell. 📸: Andy Moore, HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus

Our (with @stanam.bsky.social) new review paper on the role of tunnelling nanotubes and intercellular organelle transport in cancer is out in @febsopenbio.bsky.social The peer-review experience was excellent: thorough and constructive and helped us to write a much better paper. I'm really happy!

Our significantly expanded preprint is out. In it we show that pancreatic cancer cells can transfer ribosomes via tunnelling nanotubes and rescue protein synthesis when co-cultured with cells with impaired ribosomal biogenesis. 🧪 (Includes some #bayesian #rstats inspired by @rmcelreath.bsky.social)

I'm thrilled to share that our story is now out in Science Advances! 🎉 We use quantitative imaging to map the mito central dogma, define translation hubs in the mitochondrial matrix, and show that they're replaced by Mitochondrial Stress Bodies (MSB) when mtRNA processing is perturbed 1/4

ThermoFisher tell us their CellTracker dyes are not transferred to neighbouring cells but we see significant transfer @24h when we mix stained with unstained cells. Any suggestions how to label cells reliably so that we can track distinct populations with no or minimal transfer? 🧪 #fluorescence
Screenshot Ron ThermoFisher page on CellTracer dyes saying there is no transfer to unstained cells.Fluorescence microscopy picture of mixed stained/unstained cells with CellTracer Green showing partially stained cells due to intercellular transfer of the dye.

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to shine the spotlight on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research.

A quick snapshot from a fluorescence microscope, taken during a teaching session with medical students, showcased the fascinating world of mitochondria. The students were excited, asking many questions about why cells transfer mitochondria (MitoTracker-Red) via tunneling nanotubes (actin-green).
