Walking in downtown Seattle when suddenly… two fighter jets blast by overhead after a flyby at the Seahawks game. It was so unbelievably loud, my ears hurt and my watch alerted me to a “loud environment.” I hate this so much.

Active virus replication activates more immune signaling pathways than inactivated vaccines due to how the immune system works. The immune system recognizes pathogens based on their biochemical shape, meaning both the chemistry and the three-dimensional structure of the molecules on their surfaces.

When you get the MMR, the measles component begins replicating and making more measles virus, which is what viruses do. Making virus means making viral proteins, which are the antigens that are recognized by the immune system.

The MMR is also not recommended for people who are immunocompromised, which is why it is critical to keep uptake at 95% or more. That is the only way to protect those who are unable to take the vaccine.

That’s why they aren’t used in newborns—it takes about six months for a baby’s immune system to get up and running, so the risk of adverse events from the MMR is larger during this time because it contains replicating virus.

that can infect and replicate but don’t cause disease. The Enders-Edmonston “Further Attenuated” strain is still measles virus, but it is non-pathogenic in healthy people. However, because these vaccines are still live viruses, they are not safe for use in everyone.

Vaccines work in general by teaching the immune system how to recognize a pathogen, which means exposing the person to its antigens (targets of the immune system). The MMR is a trivalent live-attenuated vaccine, meaning it’s three attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella viruses

Actual measles infection wipes out memory immune cells and causes immune amnesia that can last for years. Effectively your immune system will no longer remember anything it was already immune to, making you vulnerable to infections you previously had immunity against.

First Crystal got measles. Then she came down with shingles. Coincidence? No, actually. Measles causes some degree of “immune amnesia” in everyone who’s infected, even five years later. Studies show people have increased medical visits and antibiotic use for (non-measles) infections for years.
