Meta has enabled Muse to build extensive and ever-growing profiles on the orbit of people in a user’s life. Based on user input but also “publicly available information.” Whether that means a web search, Facebook’s own extensive data, or buying data broker info…we don’t know? And we can’t opt out.

I wrote an e-mail to James Hollis recently (few months ago). Seems frivolous...e-mail. I should have sent a handwritten note. I was longing for some way to connect with this absolute giant in my life. (remarkably) I received a response the next day. With a pearl of wisdom I'll always cherish.

I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.

Can we please stop pretending AI can replace peer review? If I wanted my paper reviewed by a model, I could have done it already. I want my community to read it and provide feedback. That's the whole point of peer review. Science depends on expert scrutiny and accountability—not automated judgment.

#science #otd #filmsky #primatology On this day in 1960, ethologist Jane Goodall arrived in Tanzania to begin her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees.
National Geographic photo of Jane Goodall sitting on the ground facing to the left, there is a young chimpanzee sitting on the ground behind her playing with her hair.
British ethologist Jane Goodall (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Jane-Goodall) first arrived at what became Gombe Stream National Park inTanzania (https://www.britannica.com/place/Tanzania); there she conducted her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees (https://www.britannica.com/animal/chimpanzee).

Jane Goodall was studying chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania.
	•	Goodall revolutionized primatology by focusing on chimpanzees as individuals with distinct personalities rather than just numbers.
	•	Her groundbreaking observations included documenting chimpanzees creating and using tools, such as fishing for termites with twigs.
	•	She spent nearly 60 years researching and advocating for the conservation of chimpanzees and their habitats.
