Related: I really hate the trend of people referring to movies/books/games/TV/etc collectively as "media" instead of "art".

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

This video is vastly underperforming our usual standards in most metrics, but it's also the only video we've ever made that's led to a mass influx of people following me on Letterboxd, so in a way it's the most successful we've ever made.

There's a kid on my train playing a game at absolute max, obnoxiously loud, bothering everybody volume, except from the sound effects I can tell he's playing Pikmin 4 so instead of storming over I kinda just want to congratulate him on his taste.

The Oscars is the only time one billion people will tune into see a middle-aged Kiwi woman cry and then forget everything she was going to say and that makes me glad it exists

If you took $1 billion and gave it to the endowment of a different small college each day, they could each provide a free college education to several hundred students per year in perpetuity. Instead we are using that money to bomb schools and kill students in Iran, for no clearly stated purpose.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right. Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement. This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.
The political effects of X's feed algorithm

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

Genuinely think this is one of my favourite video essays, and I don't just say that because I love rugby/I'm friendly with @squidgygoat.bsky.social. The way it details both the sports drama and political tension does such a good job at illustrating how almost every activity is inherently political.

I remain astonished by 28 Years Later. Dozens of artists firing on all cylinders, producing distinct work, yet Boyle somehow pulling all these disparate chunks into a whole that feels complete, cohesive, crackling on a scale you probably can't accomplish if it's just one person's vision.

I’ve now come out of Sinners, 28 Years Later and Superman this summer invigorated by a feeling that somehow, miraculously, in the alchemy of making a big movie on that scale, art won out over commerce.

As someone who bought a Switch 2 and wants to read/listen/watch stuff about the games I've played, the fact such an enormous percentage of the work out there is speculation on the future or frame rate/tech analysis rather than examination & reflection on the art itself continues to frustrate me.
