We then estimate how the 2011 ACGME work reform, which reduced first-year residents’ consecutive work hours, affected birth outcomes. The reform led to improvements in birth outcomes for 26-30 year old physicians, the targeted group, while having no effect on older physicians or lawyers.

We find that physician mothers have worse birth outcomes than lawyer mothers (e.g. higher incidences of pre-term delivery, low birth weight, and small for gestational age infants) with the difference primarily driven by surgeon mothers.

While both occupations work long hours, physicians, especially those working in hospitals, spend more time on their feet, work irregular hours, and experience periods of intense stress. This is particularly true for residents (physicians-in-training).

In our newly published paper "Occupation Hazard? An Analysis of Birth Outcomes Among Physician Mothers" @davidslusky.bsky.social , Anupam Jena, and I investigate how a strenuous job affects health by studying the birth outcomes of physicians and lawyers. authors.elsevier.com/a/1nDXBAlwA2...

I am on the #EconJobMarket this year! I work on questions about women’s health, family, & labor. In my #JMP I study how changes in abortion access affect infant and maternal health, finding that reductions in access harm health at birth. Read the full manuscript here: lillyspringer.com

I'm on the #EconJobMarket! I study how policies and childhood environments shape outcomes of low-income & vulnerable kids. In my JMP, I study the effects of allowing youth who would have aged out of foster care at 18 to stay until 21—offering support their peers not in foster care get from parents.

What do parents do in an adaptive labor market when infant care goes away? Perhaps most interesting is what FATHERS do. 👀👀👀 Check out our newest paper below. 👇👇👇
Picture of title, authors, and abstract of new paper on the labor supply of parents of infants. Mothers increase labor supply. Fathers take leave from work. Mothers in telework-compatible jobs take less leave.
