Women are consistently more likely than men to be employed in paid care work. Since 1990, the share of women working in the paid care economy has risen from about 17% to 24.3% in 2024, while the share for men increased more modestly from about 10% to 12.2%.

Parents spend hours day on childcare. Much of this time is “Active,” representing direct engagement with children, while the other is “Passive,” involving supervision while conducting other tasks. Mothers spend an average over 8 hours a day on childcare, while fathers spend about 7 hours.
