The strategic priority for @greenparty.org.uk leadership should be to reform their internal democracy so it doesn't shoot them in the foot again come the next by- or general election.

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

I can't imagine that there are many UK citizens who have an opinion on the Euro beyond emotional attachment to pounds and pence. Though a few might manage to grunt something about taking back control that almost amounts to a pertinent point.

Even amongst proponents, the whole issue is framed as tedious necessity, never as benefit. No one prominent is ever making that case that the UK and its people can take real social, cultural, economic and geopolitical positives from membership of the EU.

Why not ask the question: 'How should we address British people's obvious reluctance to join the Euro? Who is going to explain the benefits?' Because right now, nobody is doing that.

There is a rather wider minority for abolishing the Monarchy (about 1 in 5 to 1 in 4) than for the controversy of whether only white people can be English (1 in 10). It is weird the media classes are so rarely across how niche this 'controversy' is - about 1/4 Reform voters, but few others

There we have it. Reform officially ditches its pledge - or rather, its 2024 "contract" with voters - to back proportional representation. A clear breach of contract... Via Politico:
In other Reform news: Second-in-command Richard Tice finally admitted that now the voting system Farage has long railed against could help him win a general election, the party no longer wants to scrap it. Farage used to want first-past-the-post replaced with a form of proportional representation.

Here’s the line: “In order to rescue the country from the gravity of the chaos that we face, actually a proper majority is needed from a right of center, conviction-led Reform government,” Tice told Times Radio this morning. Asked whether that meant Reform no longer wants electoral reform, he said: “Yes, because the crisis is so great.”

Israel is under immediate threat from neighbours. UK isn't. An "Iron Dome" won't help at all against attacks by ICBM or hypersonic missile, and is of limited value against drone or jet airplane.
