Dr. Cicely Saunders (b. #OTD in 1918): founded the modern hospice movement & established the global medical discipline of palliative care. Frustrated by the mid-20th-C medical mindset viewing dying patients as "failures" to be ignored, she revolutionized end-of-life care. #WomenInSTEM #hospice
A charming black-and-white portrait of Dame Cicely Mary Strode Saunders (1918–2005), the pioneering British nurse, social worker, and physician who revolutionized modern end-of-life care by founding the global hospice and palliative care movement. Left: she sits in a library or office setting with softly blurred bookshelves lining the background. She poses with her head resting gently against her right hand, wearing a dark ring on her finger. Her face is framed by softly coiffed white hair and large, round eyeglasses, and she looks directly forward with a warm, comforting, and deeply compassionate smile. She wears a dark tailored blazer over a crisp, light-colored collared shirt, detailed with a small decorative pin on her left lapel. Overlaying the lower right quadrant of the image is a stark white rectangular box containing her most historically significant quote, capturing the gentle and dignified mood of her life's work. The text reads, "you matter because you are you, and you matter to the end of your life," with the opening words styled in a large, elegant serif font. Below the quote, the text attributes the words to "- Dame Cicely Saunders, Hospice Movement Founder." The overall composition balances a professional, academic atmosphere with profound personal warmth.
