What a charming, thoughtful artifact @fortcircle.bsky.social has published.

I like him, but in a rather distant way. I appreciate the different dynamic he brings to the companions, and I enjoyed his story, but he's far from my favourite character.

Day 12/31 was Terrified. Got off to a strong start with some tense, memorable scares. Then drifted off to snoozeville.

Day 11/31 was Jeepers Creepers. So corny it feels like a bad episode of Buffy. Still kind of fun though

Day 10/31 was Cronos. Classic Del Toro. Visually lovely, dark, emotional, biting. Not my favourite of his works, but certainly enjoyable.

Day 9/31 was The Love Witch. Something about this didn't sit right with me. At times it seems to be trying to critique patriarchy, but it cannot imagine a space outside it. More self-loathing than self-empowering. If this is meant to be the female experience, I couldn't relate less.

Day 8/31 was Hokum. Proper good old fashioned scary story. Not overly ambitious, but content to be very, very good at what it sets out to do.

Day ?/31 was Mulholland Drive. I put this on the list because I was told some of its scenes were horrifying. It was very well made, but it did not horrify me, so I'm not sure I can count it to the marathon.

Day 6/31 was Sputnik. A mediocre creature feature. Interesting ideas let down by poor pacing and how utterly uninterested the film is in its own main character.

Day 5/31 was The Invitation. Formulaic, ultimately a bit forgettable. The tense build-up had some satisfying moments, but the way that farting is satisfying after you've held one in too long.

Day 4/31 was Lights Out. I never saw this back in 2016, because I worried it wouldn't live up to the excellent short its based on. It doesn't. But it's corny in a way that's kind of endearing.

Day 3/31 was The Long Walk. A premise that lives and dies on how well the actors can hold a feature -length conversation. David Jonsson is fantastic though and had me feeling feelings.

Day 2/31 was Backrooms. It bored the hell out of me. A messy attempt at saying something that feels as empty as the rooms. Apparently I only have room in my life for one film full of empty walls, and it's Skinamarink.

IT'S OCTOBER! Every year I watch 31 horror movies I've never seen before. 1/31 isn't really a horror movie, but it's pure schlock and this is my list so I can do what I want. Velocipastor made me laugh so hard I couldn't see the screen at times. This is exactly my taste in cinema.

In today's diary, I get into one of my favorite subjects: agency in historical games. Did the Opium Wars have to happen? Were the player's historical counterparts in a position to prevent them? It's a big subject, and a place where the 2e differs sharply from 1e. boardgamegeek.com/thread/37746...

Ukrainian board game studio Boardova has broken into US hobby distribution, four years after its launch by two volunteers who met while supporting refugees and Ukraine’s army in the wake of Russia’s invasion: boardgamewire.com/index.php/20... (Hat tip @wargamer.com for excellent background info)
Three wooden board game meeples in purple, green and red, on a series of nine hexagonal tiles with illustrations of various terrain types, such as mountains and a river. The purple and red meeples resemble humans, while the much larger green meeple is a strange-looking humanoid with horns. Aridnyk board game from Ukrainian publisher Boardova. Two cards, one being showing the word Directive and lots of instructional writing underneath, the other in a deep red/brown with Directive and Ministry of Truth visible in white writing. Cards from the board game 1984: Unperson from Ukrainian publisher Boardova.

Neither Wargamer nor EN World received preview details about the World of Warcraft D&D book. Instead, everything is being filtered through YouTube influencers and WotC's Dungeon Masters AP series. Covering previews is dubious work anyhow, but journalists were seemingly left out of the first push.
