From a grain of sand to the history of glaciations. Proud to see our paper featured on the cover of Geology! Even prouder of my PhD student, Dawid Siemek, whose work helped uncover a new chapter in the glacial history of the Carpathians. read here doi.org/10.1130/G548... @geosociety.bsky.social

Mission accomplished: cave deformation found, measured, and sampled on Amorgos (maybe some connected to 1956 EQ) and Ikaria (next to Samos) 9-day trip; 2 islands; 7 days of caving (1-5 caves/day); 20 caves (9-131 m of depth); 33 samples; two (efficient) friends

Like in a thriller, I found the best site with fallen, crushed stalactites and colums, sealed bedrock #fractures, a few hours before leaving Amorgos…so good I ran out of sampling bags. Did I find the 1956 #earthquake in the geological record? Maybe an older events? Dating will show

sample or not to sample? ... sample! another 2 days on Amorgos, 9 caves, two more to go. So far, no "smoking gun," a few compressed columns, some broken stalactites, and, unfortunately, very few active speleothems. But if it were that easy, someone would have done it already... ehh research💁‍♂️

First day of fieldwork in the #Amorgos 🇬🇷 #caves, looking not only for damage from the 1956 #earthquake but especially for older structures, to hopefully catch other events that are so far lacking in the records. First cave revealed some very tiny #deformation. Stay tuned @ncn.gov.pl

⚒️ 🧪 A M8.8 earthquake just ruptured the subduction zone offshore Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula. This is one of the world’s truly huge earthquakes, and a triggered tsunami is currently traveling across the Pacific ocean. This same fault ruptured on July 20th in a M7.4, and last August in a M7.1.
