My guess at the WCS roster Tolle, Gray, Suarez Chapman, Whitlock, Miller, Weissert, Gamboa, Moran, Bello, Bennett, Crochet Adley, Wong Conteras, Sogard, Story, Durbin, IKF Anthony, Rafaela, Abreu, Duran, Jones, Eaton, Ward Olds last P out. Monasterio cedes to Ward as PR.

Knew I'd forget someone and that someone is Crochet. Guerrero going down probably opens the door for him. I presume Houck pitching today precludes his addition.

Because you want him fresh for the playoffs.

Yeah I think Bello is the break glass in the first 4 innings guy. I don't think it'd be crazy if he got a start at some point if they make a deep run, but I don't think it's likely before the ALCS.

Here's how things line up right now with the rotation. All kinds of options available for WCS and they got Tolle and Bennett a bunch of rest. That 10/4 off day is helpful in giving the WCS game 1 starter an extra day, especially if it's Tolle.
9/20: Sandoval (4 days' rest)
9/21: OFF
9/22: Tolle (8)
9/23: Gray (5)
9/24: Suarez (5)
9/25: Bennett (9)
9/26: Sandoval (5)
9/27: Call someone up from AAA.
9/28: OFF
9/29: WCS GAME 1: Tolle (6) or Gray (5)
9/30: WCS GAME 2: Gray (6) or Tolle (7) or Suarez (5)
10/1: WCS GAME 3: Suarez (6) or Tolle (8)
10/2: OFF
10/3: ALDS GAME 1: WC3 (+2 days) or Bennett (7)
10/4: OFF
10/5: ALDS GAME 2: WC1 (5)
10/6: OFF
10/7: ALDS GAME 3: WC2 (6)
10/8: ALDS GAME 4: Bennett (11) or WC3 (6)
10/9: OFF
10/10: ALDS GAME 5: ALDS1 (6)

This all assumes Bello in the bullpen.

Red Sox announce the rotation for the Cleveland series is Tolle (8 days rest), Gray (5), Suarez (5). This lines that trio up, in that order, for the WCS on 6 days' rest apiece. For the final series, will be curious to see how they deploy Bennett and Bello, if at all.

I get the argument Tolle should get Gm 2 (I've come around myself), but at this point, it might require getting too cute to flip him and Suarez. Could start him on 4 days rest that last week with a quick hook or something I guess? But this series was the time to set the rotation.

Suarez, Gray, Tolle line up to pitch in that order this weekend. A 5-man rotation the rest of the way keeps them and Bennett on 5 days rest thru the end, then effectively sets those three up for the WCS on same. If they tweak that order this weekend, might signal WCS rotation.

A first for me in person - 1B ump just called a pitch clock violation on the second baseman for having his heels on the RF grass (I'm pretty sure). Ball in 2026.

A sunny one to close the series with a bullpen game. One can only hope I get a Hudson White bullpen appearance. Al Bumbry in attendance, which is pretty cool.

Another quiet offensive night for Portland, sending up the minimum through 7. RHP Alex Bouchard gave up a few loud hits but was interesting. 4SM, SI, SL, CT, CH. Sat 93-96 T97. Got misses with all pitches but primarily looked to tunnel the cutter and slider. 8 whiffs tonight.

As I write this, Worcester (6 weeks left) & Portland (5 weeks) both sit 0.5 games back in their divisions while Greenville & Salem (both 4 weeks) hold playoff spots. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't remember all 4 full-season affiliates making the playoffs before.

I only caught this from the Salem game notes today (H/T Braden Schenck) but as noted below, the Red Sox have apparently signed former UNC senior Cameron Padgett as an undrafted free agent. Padgett, a RHP, has been assigned to Salem. www.salisburypost.com/2026/08/07/m...

Adley deal, in a vacuum, is a HAUL for the O's. But if the alternative is they get nothing, is that worse? See 2025. Can't make the O's take less for Adley. They clearly looked at other options based on the reporting. Can still hate it. I might? Just a bigger perspective.

Complete speculation, PTBNL being reported now strikes me as a response to the medicals. If Adley stays healthy, it's one thing, if not, someone else or, like the Jordan Hicks deal, it goes away.

Yowza. #2 (Eyanson), 3 (Witherspoon), & 6 (Azocar) prospects in the #SP60 in the deal, with Azocar moving up at least one spot with Bennett graduating in our update this week. Plus Narvaez who was almost a 3-win player last year, but has struggled in 2026. That's a haul for O's.

I'm told by a team source that there were other terms of the CWS deal related to the PTBNLs, and that there actually will not be any other players moving in that deal now. So there you go.

Chris Hatfield @spchrishatfield.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Greenville, on both sides of the ball, strikes me as the level from which we may see the Red Sox look to deal from. Loaded lineup and the rotation runs something like 7-9 deep depending on how generous your definition of "interesting" is. First use of that depth here.

LHP Jojo Ingrassia is probably a better player than I thought they'd give up for Jones. But he has a long injury history: Missed most of May with an elbow strain. Missed May-Sept 2025 in part due to a shoulder injury. Missed a month in 2024 with left elbow inflammation.

Potential that today will be a very busy day on the farm. Deadline day for the Hicks PTBNLs (2 out, 1 in), Schaffner and Hull headed to Greenville (per Andrew Parker), Cespedes to Portland (also Andrew). Could see more moves to get the draftees on the DRL as well.

As the deadline approaches, I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox move 1 or 2 low-minors catchers out of necessity. They have 3 guys each in High-A and Low-A they probably want to get innings, five of whom probably should be in Greenville. Maybe 1 to CWS as a PTBNL?
090
Chris Hatfield @spchrishatfield.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
As the deadline approaches, remember there are 2 pending outgoing PTBNLs and 1 pending incoming PTBNL from the Hicks/Sandlin/Ziehl trade with the White Sox. They're due to be exchanged by 8/1. Also, the PTBNL going to Detroit for Jones is outstanding, of course.

Some injury news: IF Henry Godbout (#SP60 #8) is expected to begin rehab games next week, potentially with Salem but perhaps at the complex. He's been out since May 30 with a broken hand from a HBP that required surgery. He was hitting .277/.410/.492 before the injury.

Why Alec Gamboa was only added as the 27th man for game 2 today while, for example, he was added for both games last Friday: The 27th player isn't eligible for the 1st game if the postponement was earlier in the same series, unless the teams agree otherwise. No idea why that is.

RHP Sadbiel Delzine (#SP60 #10) has been promoted from the FCL (which ends on Thursday and where he'd likely made his last start anyway) to Salem. 39.2 IP, 2.72 ERA, 43 K, 18 BB, 1.06 WHIP on the season.

Depends on how deep they think Suarez can go tomorrow, I think. Bello as the long relief option makes sense. Otherwise send him down to stay stretched out.

I'm not sure there's a clearer sign that the energy has flipped with this team than the news that Ranger Suarez will start tomorrow after a minimum IL stay. Two months ago he's out at least 6 weeks.

I love this from SP forum poster Incandeza: The Red Sox bonuses were roughly equivalent to slot for picks: 49 (Schaffner) 50 (Mataczynski) 61 (Shelar) 71 (Hull) 93 (LaFavor) BOS had picks 20, 67, & 96. So it's as if they traded back from 20 for 3 late 2nds: ~ 49, 50, & 61.

On the uniqueness of the Red Sox draft strategy: I looked at MLB.com data for pick 11 to the end of the 1st rd from 2017-2025. The largest discount was ATL signing Tate Southisene for $1.36m under slot last year at 1-22. Schaffner signed for ~$2.374m under slot.

$1.5m signing bonus for 9th-rd pick Martin Shelar, reported by @ChrisCotillo and @AriA1exander, looks like a record for that round, after checking the B-Ref and Baseball America draft databases. Previous record was Clay Holmes at $1.2m in 2011.
