Here's how things line up right now with the rotation. All kinds of options available for WCS and they got Tolle and Bennett a bunch of rest. That 10/4 off day is helpful in giving the WCS game 1 starter an extra day, especially if it's Tolle.

9/20: Sandoval (4 days' rest)
9/21: OFF
9/22: Tolle (8)
9/23: Gray (5)
9/24: Suarez (5)
9/25: Bennett (9)
9/26: Sandoval (5)
9/27: Call someone up from AAA.
9/28: OFF
9/29: WCS GAME 1: Tolle (6) or Gray (5)
9/30: WCS GAME 2: Gray (6) or Tolle (7) or Suarez (5)
10/1: WCS GAME 3: Suarez (6) or Tolle (8)
10/2: OFF
10/3: ALDS GAME 1: WC3 (+2 days) or Bennett (7)
10/4: OFF
10/5: ALDS GAME 2: WC1 (5)
10/6: OFF
10/7: ALDS GAME 3: WC2 (6)
10/8: ALDS GAME 4: Bennett (11) or WC3 (6)
10/9: OFF
10/10: ALDS GAME 5: ALDS1 (6)

This all assumes Bello in the bullpen.

I get the argument Tolle should get Gm 2 (I've come around myself), but at this point, it might require getting too cute to flip him and Suarez. Could start him on 4 days rest that last week with a quick hook or something I guess? But this series was the time to set the rotation.

Henry Godbout is having himself a week. Here's his fourth homer of the week, EV of 101.2 mph.

A sunny one to close the series with a bullpen game. One can only hope I get a Hudson White bullpen appearance. Al Bumbry in attendance, which is pretty cool.

Brady Tygart finishing his day with a strikeout of Nats SS Gavin Fien. This will likely be the last start of Tygart's rehab, but I could see him being activated and added to the Salem roster, where there's room.

This organization continues to fail miserably at messaging, internal and external. Incredible.

Players were not invited to ask the bosses questions about Alex Cora’s firing and the situation.

“They made it very clear that we get paid to play baseball and we need to just focus on playing baseball,” Whitlock said.

Trevor Story is not happy with the decisions and says he wants to clear the air with Craig Breslow today. Says “some of the best coaches in the world didn’t get a fair shot.”

Full house in the Red Sox dugout. Clearly brought more than the official roster. Also, roster notes, Patrick Galle and Ben Hansen were added, Cooper Adams removed. Also seems OF Anderson Fermin and IF Mason White may have been added.

One man's guess at the wild card roster. SPs aren't in any particular order. Early is off but comes back if they advance. Don't need a 4th starter in a 3-game series.

LF Duran SP Crochet
SS Story SP Bello
3B Bregman SP Giolito
DH Yoshida
2B Gonzalez CL Chapman
CF Rafaela SU Whitlock
RF Abreu RP Matz
1B Lowe RP Wilson
C Narvaez RP Slaten
RP Weissert
C Wong RP Kelly
IF Hamilton RP Tolle
OF Refsnyder LR Harrison
UT Eaton
UT Sogard

Looking at the AAA roster, if the Red Sox think they need an arm... You'd think there's a chance it's David Sandlin. The problem is he's really struggled in the bullpen. 16.1-25-17-15-11-14 in 12 relief appearances since 8/5, giving up runs in 8 of them.

Chris Hatfield @spchrishatfield.bsky.social · 18/09/2025

Seems there's a decent chance Payton Tolle makes his MLB relief debut tomorrow. Enough guys might be unavailable you'd think they might make a move for someone, but all those guys have pitched too... Need the offense to make it a laugher and/or for Bello to go deep.

One way they could use the last pitcher spot: 9/1-2: Kelly 9/3-10: Harrison up, makes 2 starts to keep Tolle on min. 5 days rest 9/11-EOS: Harrison down for another reliever. With their off days, they only need spot starts on 9/3 and 9/10 to give Tolle sufficient rest.

9/1 Bello
2 Crochet
3 Harrison spot start (up for Kelly)
4 OFF
5 Tolle (6 days rest)
6 May
7 Giolito
8 Bello
9 Crochet
10 Harrison spot start (down for a RP)
11 OFF
12 Tolle (6 days rest)
13 May
14 Giolito
15 OFF
16 Bello
17 Crochet
18 Tolle (5 days rest)
19 May
20 Giolito
21 Bello
22 OFF
23 Crochet
24 Tolle (5 days rest)
25 May
26 Giolito
27 Bello
28 ideally save Crochet for game 1

Angle isn't great, but Travieso was. At least 16 whiffs by my count thru 4.2 before he hit his pitch count. 96-97 T98 FB (vid), very good SL 85-88 w varied shape, flashed a nice CH 87-90. Very impressed. Threw strikes which has been his issue this year.

David Sandlin worked a short outing tonight. Bit surprising 3 days after he threw 57 pitches. Threw 33 tonight incl the below, then struck out a batter in the 6th before being lifted. Some loud contact but it's about getting used to the role for now.

Presuming Stock gets DFA for more bullpen help, I wonder if they break glass on Brian Van Belle (#SP60 #58). Penrod's on the 40 but he's on pseudo-rehab still. You might want to save him for when you need a spot start at this point, but I'm not sure there's another option.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what to make of this. Most of Story's defensive issues seem to come shaded to second. Is that a product of shading that way to help Campbell while he grows at second? Shifting?

Chris Hatfield @spchrishatfield.bsky.social · 13/04/2025

Looking at bullpen options, Criswell can be recalled by putting Fitts on the IL, but likely unavailable today. Maybe call up Stock (open 40 spot) AND Criswell (otherwise down until 4/22), option the now-gassed Winckowski, Fitts to IL? DFA Stock for Guerrero once Criswell ready.
