Been making my daughters catch up on all your stuff this last year. Excited to watch this for the 1st time with them. One has just started high school and the other is starting next year so this show seems perfectly timed for them. 2 episodes in and they (& me) are hooked!

Happy new @stephenking.bsky.social book day to all those who celebrate it! Been looking forward to this one for months. Chilling reading while donating blood isn’t a bad way to kill an afternoon.

Speaking of the musical there is a podcast about the disaster of broadway debut of the musical & why and how it went so wrong and how it’s gone on to be performed semi regularly in high schools.

This screened recently at the Melbourne International Film Festival and it was easily my favorite film of the festival. Absolutely beautiful, funny & heartbreaking in equal measure.

this is the kind of design costume designers make to tell you who are the bad guys in a space movie

I remember hearing once someone say ‘The only thing dogs do wrong is just not live long enough’. It’s such a true statement. All you can do is love them while you have them. Here is my beautiful Maliki.

I don’t think there was a single audience member that wasn’t affected by this film. This was easily my favorite film of MIFF & an absolutely phenomenal way to finish the festival.

Tangles ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow, just wow. Absolutely stunning animation so full of warmth, humour & heartbreak. The black & white animation style is great with the tiny additions of color. The vocal cast are great in this but it is really the animation style & writing that make this the work of art that it is.

The Incomer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a classic quirky Scottish comedy. It has a lot of heart even if it’s a little predictable. There’s a bit where Daniel’s dragged away from his oats quickly & it’s some of the funniest simple physical comedy I have seen in a while.

Everybody to Kenmure Street ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fuck I love Scotland & Glasgow! Such a great documentary that in a clear way shows how one day unfolded & how a whole community stood up to unjust policing. I do wish there was an interview with one of the police from the day but that’s only a small gripe.

Kim Novak's Vertigo ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kind of dull directed biography on one of the golden era of hollywoods brightest leading ladies. Despite its lacklustre directing it’s still great to see so many of her stunning paintings, old films and hearing her recollections.

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 22/08/2026

Marama ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ This is a beautiful looking film with a very talented cast. Didn’t find it particularly horrific (other than the English appropriating & destroying the Maori culture). The music stings trying for the jump scares don’t work & detracts from the film.

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 21/08/2026

Bouchra ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Low fi animation about a gay Moroccan and her relationship with her mother. It very well done with some great scripting and editing. #MIFF #MIFF2026

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 21/08/2026

La Perra ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a very slow film centered on island life & a woman and the dog she adopts. The dog is a very beautiful dog but found the story a little too slow. I also found the foley work really loud & obtrusive. #MIFF #MIFF2026

The End ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ This was another favorite & another stop motion. The sets & character design were all amazing and so well done. The multiple stories were all funnt and weird. #MIFF #MIFF2026

Paper Trail ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ This takes you through someones life through their scribbles as a toddler to an adult. It’s really well done & edited stylishly but just goes for 2 mins too long. Once in a Body ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Loved the thick paint style of this. The animation was beautiful & the whole thing looked great.

100

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Please ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ This was one of my favs. It’s a series of stop motion vignettes about connecting with people. The characters & sets are all great & the various stories are very amusing. Balconada ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Struggled getting into this short but as it continued I really enjoyed it. Has a nice sound design.

100

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

My Good Boy ⭐️✨ Really didn’t enjoy this. Found the animation, character design & story quite unpleasant unfortunately. Boundaries ⭐️⭐️✨ Looked interesting but struggled to get into this one.

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Our Choir Has Always Been Travelling ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wanted to like this more than I did as it’s a sweet story but I struggled with the animation style. Hold It Together ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a very well told story with really great character design. Story is slow but impactful.

Daughters of the Late Colonel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Really enjoyed this one. I could see the scratchy minimal style could not be for everyone but it worked for me. The only bit I don’t like was when it moved from sketching to real footage for a few shots.

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Animation Shorts ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ A good mix of animated shorts this year. Most were fairly decent. Stand outs were probably the stop motion ones. #MIFF #MIFF2026

If you want something less ‘literary’ & a fun genre novel I suggest The Graveyard Shift by Maria Lewis A fun modern horror that is set in Melbourne & the independent cinemas.

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

This looks terrible. They have turned them 3D but somehow looks flatter, duller & lifeless. All the character is gone from them.

010

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

Decorado ⭐️⭐️⭐️ My first animation of the festival. It’s a beautiful looking film with great animation and imagery but unfortunately the story is all over the place. It’s more like a series of vignettes that are just held together & I’m not convinced it works. #MIFF #MIFF2026

Duncan Hamilton @spacegeek.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

Parallel Tales ⭐️⭐️✨ There is some good in this but at times it is a little too slow and dull. A lot of the characters are very unlikeable. Originally decided to see it due to its similar ideas to Rear Window but it is a very different film that doesn’t really come together. #MIFF #MIFF2026

The Fox ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Aussie fuckin’ version of the fuckin’ trope of magical solutions fuckin’ back firing & not fuckin’ working as expected. Pretty fuckin’ funny & all youse cunts should check it out if youse can handle swearing. #MIFF #MIFF2026 MIFF 2026 boxd.it/VMkr2/detail

Bell, Book & Candle ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good film from ‘58 where Kim Novak gets Jimmy Stewart to fall in love with her by pretending to be someone else. It’s just not as good as the other film from ‘58 where Kim Novak gets Jimmy Stewart to fall in love with her by pretending to be someone else. I did love the cat.

Just finished the episode. So good to have you guys back, especially with a pretty decent run of films coming up. You can actually find a recipe online for Tiana’s beignets. I made some as part of a dessert plate for a Disney 100 dinner party we threw.

Disney themed dessert plate featuring Tiana’s beingnets, the grey stuff (it’s delicious!) & poisoned apple from Snow White.
