Harry Stranger and I have been doing mischief, gathering information on the Soviet Aspidnoye airfield in the far north. Not much available on it. It was a long runway, suitable for bombers, but never paved. My suspicion is they had bigger plans and never finished it. No aircraft in any photos.

Looking for satellite reconnaissance images to include in my LANYARD part 3 article and came across this July 1961 CORONA photo of the Soviet nuclear test site at Novaya Zemlya. I'm using the images for general illustration, not because the article is about NZ. Tsar Bomba was detonated here 10-31-61

A couple more images of the KH-6 LANYARD camera system. One image shows both the film supply and takeup reels at the front of the camera. That takeup reel would have been mounted inside a reentry vehicle. Other photo shows the image reflecting mirror that looked down at Earth, and the camera lens.

I've been getting a lot of reminders lately as to why I pivoted my site's main focus from current satellite images of spaceports to historical declassified satellite imagery of locations all over the world. Aside from my personal interests, it was definitely the right call.

This follows the well-known KH-8 GAMBIT-3 satellite image showing one of the vehicles in 1968.

The Caspian Sea Monster at Kaspiysk photographed with a KH-8 reconnaissance satellite in 1968. This wasn't the only image captured at such an angle. I don't remember off the top of my head exactly how many targets were captured in this way, but a large portion of the US east coast was imaged for sure. See the images below of Norfolk and the surrounding area, taken 10 frames prior to the Cape
