They're basically running out of foot soldiers and will be left with the least capable, most sycophantic, whack-jobbiest hacks and cranks; people who couldn't overthrow a rural county commissioners meeting, much less a country.

I'd be more worried about the purges if there was any indication they were retaining enough core competency to even keep things running. At this point it sounds like they're even getting rid of people who are sympathetic to the agenda but balk at all the rank incompetence and corner-cutting.

Occasionally Wallace is heard yelling and knocking things over in the background, followed by the sounds of Gromit futilely seeking a quieter place to record.

Yes, Trumpism's unfailing urge to do the most vulgar and morally repellant thing possible in all situations is exhausting. But the instinct on the other side to describe it all as deft and masterful manipulation of the tools of tyranny, aimed squarely at a sinister goal, is JUST as exhausting.

Pink Floyd has been an Everything band for me since junior high school; which I mention because the way much of their output was centered around albums, I suspect they're going to be an Everything or Nothing band for people unless you add a Just That One Album category.

A funny thing for me has been discovering that I thought The Cure was a Greatest Hits band, but then realizing rather late in life that really there was just one song I despised in high school (and still don't care for), and now they've become an Everything (minus one song?) band for me.

I'm shocked, absolutely shocked that in an era in which there's a massive surge of anti-LGBTQ bigotry, much of it pointed directly at the primary education system (gender policing in girl's sports, removal of books from libraries, etc.), teens are declining to *self-identify* as LGBTQ.

I mean, hell, these idiots are even writing off people bonding over a videogame they all *hated*. E.g. the collective disappointment in KOTOR 2. No, wait, that's inaccurate: this guy's former friends may end up bonding over that time he forced them to play the game he made that was All About Him.

MEMO FROM JOHN PICACIO TO MUST READ MAGAZINES • OCTOBER 8, 2026

Thank you for the reply. I'm passing on the Asimov's 50th Anniversary cover art opportunity.

Although changes to the contract have been offered, I'm still expected to surrender Moral Rights to my Work and waive my Copyright. This will not happen. The truth is the Company's original boilerplate clauses expecting waivers of Moral Rights (amongst other demands) should have never existed.

I appreciate the offer to negotiate further, and perhaps even arrive at a unique set of contractual conditions just for me. But even if we landed upon suitable terms, there's no guarantee an up-and-coming artist would not be presented the original, overly-aggressive boilerplate terms, instead of those offered to me. I'm a 30-year veteran artist of the SFF publishing field. I just won my fourth Hugo Award. I care about the future of this field, and the future of my fellow writers and artists. I care about their rights, just as much as my own.

There's no way I want them waiving their Moral Rights to their work either.

A final thought -- the SFF literary and arts community is tight-knit. The recent history of Must Read Magazine's contractual dealings is not positive. Yes, some creators have reportedly received better deals than others, and Must Read has been willing to negotiate in certain cases. But the fact is -- none of these professionals should spend weeks and months fighting for basic creative rights that encroach upon their livelihoods and futures. Must Read's policy choices are tarnishing the proud assets that they purchased, and that's a great shame.

Thank you for your time, and I wish better days ahead for Asimov's and her sister magazines,

[John's logo]

This ends with Scholastic adopting marketing tactics from Jack Chick. "I told you we shouldn't have Trick-or-Treated the weird house at the end of the block! They gave everyone Harry Potter hardcovers and the old lady who gives out full-size chocolate bars was out by the time we got to her place!"

I liked it better when we pointed and laughed at Mencius Moldbug's stupid blog instead of pointing and laughing at his coverage by mainstream media. 15 years ago, if you'd told me the craziest corners of the Internet would break containment and drive government policy, I'd have said you were nuts.

And it's their right to exclude people (within legal bounds), but it's really really funny for them to do so when a big part of their schtick is free speech and forum access for right-wing views; to the point where it would be hypocrisy if they actually meant any of their "free debate" guff.

Daily bunny no.3465 needs some snacks and paper towels
A bunny runs down a city street at night, where a small mini-mart has just closed for the night. The owner of the store has just changed the sign on the door to 'closed', and gives the running bunny a sad frown. Another store employee is sweeping up inside.

I can't pick *one* so I'm not sure this is my *favorite*, but I've been a little obsessed with Cigarettes After Sex lately and I think I might, *might* actually prefer this to the Radiohead original even though I seem to remember it bouncing off me the very first time I heard it.

To paraphrase Randall Kennedy, Thomas was an ambitious Black person and there were a lot of people ahead of him in the Democrats, the Republican party offered a shorter line. And even there, I think he remembered and filed away every slight, every injury, every insult.
020
R. Eerie VanBoo-kirk @sotsogm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
And Thomas isn't wrong about that. What's unfortunate is that his response wasn't that we should make it better, his response was that the smart play is to lean into the meanness and ugliness.
220
R. Eerie VanBoo-kirk @sotsogm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
And I think he's the outlier generally: I think that of all of them, Thomas is genuinely cynical and indifferent. I think his experience in private schools and Yale convinced him (and not irrationally, sadly) that we live in a racist and hypocritical society.

Similarly, I think they all believe their own success can be ascribed to their hard work and not privilege of birth, good fortune, or whiteness. You may notice there's one fellow in the list that doesn't quite apply to.

I think a lot of them really believe the market is inherently virtuous and, left unregulated, magically produces virtuous results (and if it fails to do so, it's still too regulated; laissez-faire capitalism can never fail, it can only be failed).

My one quibble with this framing is that I think a lot of these Reaganites were actually naive and foolish enough to actually believe a recipe for corruption, lawlessness, racism, and misogyny somehow wouldn't produce exactly those things despite ample historical evidence to the contrary.

The thing about this is that if you feel like civil rights laws are an attack on YOU, maybe you ARE evil and backwards, and maybe part of the problem is the rest of us have been far too solicitous of your feelings when we've suggested you've been misled or really just have "economic anxiety".

I still remember helping our office admin track down a computer that the state insisted was a $3k machine we'd been given (this was in the early 2000s) and eventually figuring out it was a big beige 386 thing that you couldn't have gotten one of our clients to steal for us.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”
