Celebrating the arrival of autumn with the glorious Liv Ullmann, photographed by Philippe Le Tellier in 1969.
Liv Ullmann looks directly at the camera in this portrait; she's wearing a black turtleneck and a golden brown coat. She is standing next to tree branches with similarly gold-brown leaves.

Mangrove (2020) part of Small Axe miniseries One of the best courtroom drama, of recent years at least. It's not necessary saying how it blows The trial of the Chicago 7 out of water, but I'll say while completely different movies it's has a better portrayal of a black revolutionary group than OBAA
Still from Mangrove

Still thinking about the 4th dream in Resurrection (2025). Bi Gan got into my brain circa 2018 and made a film out of some of my obsessions of that time (The Addiction, Noè, WKW, Rebels of the Neon God, Only Lovers Left Alive)

Lemming (2005) is funny because at some point it turns into The Conversation but with an hamster instead of bugs. It's relatable because I too would get paranoid if I wasn't sure of being worthy partner of my wife Charlotte Gainsbourg

Inazuma (Lightning), 1952, Japan - by director Mikio Naruse
Captured in a moment of quiet tenderness from Mikio Naruse’s 1952 masterpiece Inazuma (Lightning), this frame features the legendary Hideko Takamine as Kiyoko, gently holding a small kitten within the sparse confines of a post-war Tokyo home. As Kiyoko murmurs that the animal "can understand our words," her soft, downward gaze and gentle touch reveal a longing for genuine connection amidst emotional isolation. In the film, Kiyoko is a 23-year-old bus conductor attempting to navigate the suffocating, financially mercenary dynamics of her family—a household tied together by a matriarch who bore four children with four different men. Surrounded by siblings locked in petty squabbles and opportunistic arrangements, Kiyoko finds in the quiet companion a rare, non-judgmental comfort that her human relatives fail to provide.

Adapted from the acclaimed prose of Fumiko Hayashi, Inazuma stands as a high-water mark of post-war shoshimin-eiga (dramas depicting the lower-middle class), showcasing Naruse's unparalleled ability to find deep tragedy and subtle dignity in everyday domestic struggle. The visual composition exemplifies Naruse’s understated aesthetic: simple monochrome lighting, naturalistic framing bounded by sliding timber doors and woven baskets, and an unadorned focus on character movement. Kiyoko’s crisp, short-sleeved Western blouse and modest hairstyle reflect the changing sartorial landscape of 1950s Japan, marking her as a new generation of working women striving for personal autonomy within a society undergoing rapid, tumultuous reconstruction.

He had more iconic roles in other films, but Ben Gazzara for me will always be the blind man who wouldn't acknowledge his blindness while the whole town went along with it in Dogville, and Vincent Gallo's father in Buffalo '66. What a guy. He would bring so much to any role no matter how small

Remembering the great Ben Gazzara, born on this day in 1930. 🖤 Watch him in John Cassavetes's 1970s masterpieces THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE and OPENING NIGHT on the Criterion Channel.
Ben Gazzara in a black tuxedo with a ruffled white shirt and a red flower on his lapel, looking down as he holds cash bills in his hands. John Cassavetes and Ben Gazzara laughing together. Ben Gazzara sitting at a table in a restaurant with orange chairs, a tall red pillar, and a vase of orange flowers in the foreground.
