Songs used to be all about vagabonds, tramps, hobos, tatterdemalions. Now songs are about the nicest clothes a stripper can wear. Can't we have a beat you can dance to but describing a grimy stinking article of clothing picked dripping from the gutter by a vagrant?

It is not possible to listen to anything T-Bone Burnett has produced without wanting to kill all "country music" discourse, record executives, and popular audiences with your bare hands.

[stepping out of my time machine to talk to Elvis in 1957] 70 years from now rock music is just 10 minutes of a guy mumbling "tell em bout the knife dream". Elvis: huh. Uh huh huh. Me: Tell em Elvis. Elvis: It's waiting in the walls with manacle and chain.

[Learning that the commune has beautiful well-maintained grounds and Z'xklavinak's priests are also compassionate and attentive lovers] I have made the correct decision.

We can't be a cult because that requires a supreme leader and Z'xklavinak doesn't even deign to speak through mortal flesh. The priest triumverate who divinate Z'xklavinak's ripples in our world think you're being pretty toxic actually, so I'm going to stay on the commune for a while. Ok bye.

You think I'm "spending too much time with 'the cult'"? Uh... do you mean... my friends? The people who teach me new things and reveal new facets of my belief system and explain why everyone else is evil and should be brought under the sway of the terrifying eye of Z'xklavinak? *that* cult?

In the '80s, some of the world's most fascinating animation was made in Uzbekistan. It was a time of "absolute creative freedom with full funding." We're looking at the story behind the scene, and at the gems it produced: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/visions-in...

I haven't really written anything in a year, maybe 2 now, because I do not have that dog in me. I can only post for 0 likes, not toil over something for months of my free time to get a "these parts are good but it's not quite working". I lack the vital spark necessary to turn over my own engine.

Sometimes people will say something that they think is encouraging, a general "Yeah that's progress, keep going", which devoid of other reward is not strong enough to encourage continued endeavors. I am a rat who has been given mental diseases by my handlers. I will only respond to a heroin button.

"why don't the people claiming to fear the singularity simply turn off the internet?" great point. we should delete the internet, the thing that is possible to do and everyone agrees on.

Do you have any thoughts about why there was so little polling or discussion about the 2 presidencies Trump won that address the electorate's feeling about women candidates? It's always felt to me like that should be more central than the specific policies or personalities.

You're allowed to kill up to 10% of your vassal state, that's just called "decimation" and it's basically fine. Like yeah, you shouldnt do it. Dont do it, but, it's fine. Less than 5% is barely even newsworthy. It's a crime roughly equivalent to jaywalking. Trying to arrest someone for it is cringe.

It's actually illegal in the US to suggest that actions have history or consequences that might exist outside the scope of the law. Everything that happened cannot be changed and neither can anything that will, the only ethically defensible act is doing whatever gives you the most money right now.

I think it's important to understand people don't really ignore evil, they make sloppy metaphysical and moral philosphical arguments to assuage their own egos. Their identity is all wrapped up with their own perception and being right and that they and their friends are not horrible people.

I work with hundreds of people who are mostly "smarter" than me and all more formally educated and they're like 90% using this constantly for everything. It's tempting to say the people that committed to it are stupid or in a cult, but I need you to understand that is not the complete picture.

Employees and management all want to believe them and theirs are the people who can use LLMs to good effect. The companies building services around it are lowering the barrier to effective use. The problem is that it "works" and the goal is to bring that benefit to everyone, damn other consequences.

The latest Doctorow thing getting passed around isn't "wrong" but it only gives 1 paragraph at the end to "AI is actually useful when used by skilled professionals" which is a weird thing to sneak in at the end. That's the whole problem.

One should think about “robot servants” as a kind of ostentatious display of extraneous capital, like rolling coal for the labor disciplinarian set. They don’t and can’t replace human labor as much as they enable showing off the waste of resources that requires extra human work to imply the opposite

It feels to me like there's a too small contingent of people against it yet still acknowledging how strongly it's all still developing. Despite the trillion dollar financial shell game, there's enough "there" there to prop up most of the bad downstream effects. bsky.app/profile/soro...

A good bit is you can suddenly be moving alarmingly, impossibly, fast - faster than most people can run - while maintaining what would otherwise appear to be a typical walking gait. Or folding into an impossibly small space, under a cupboard or into the washing machine. Our bodies are made for this.

One time I was (sort of unwillingly) at the front of a Gogol Bordello concert and the singer tried to crowdsurf by leaning back on me but I had no idea what was happening and everyone around me was a 16 year old girl not helping lift him so I just kind of held him for a while, then he stood back up.
