Slander is spoken; libel is written. But this isn't either of those. It's detailed reporting from a respected outlet with damning evidence. And "most consequential Commerce Secretary in modern history" is as impressive as "shortest NBA player from Luxembourg"
Speaking on behalf of Lutnick, the White House said: "The BBC's pathetic and desperate attempt to slander Secretary Lutnick will do nothing to change the fact that he has been the most consequential Commerce Secretary in modern history."

It’s genuinely remarkable how complete the consensus around anti-Black racism as an unremarkable feature of public and political life has become.

Yup. The entire 16 months I’ve been on the ICE flight/TCR beat, I’ve encouraged other journos to join me, bc there are more stories here than I could possibly tell on my own. Many indy journos have. But for MSM reporters, too often they seem content to just repeat what’s already been reported.

Sure. There are journalists who are so thirsty to be fancy (or desperate for any job) that they’ll complain for years about being dicked over by NYT and then leap at the chance to work there. But not everyone. And I think that number of refusers grows as NYT’s misbehavior does.

There are new and specific numbers in this story, so it’s worth reading. I continue to resent the lack of credit to Nick Schwellenbach at @pogo.org, Dan Friedman at @motherjones.com, and me, who have previously reported every other aspect of this story, including that the sale prices were very high.

And they are in no danger of going out of business by rightfully crediting you and others! It's such horseshit. It is based on a culture of petty theft that comes DIRECTLY from the circ wars between Pulitzer and Hearst. It is an extremely dumb practice in the Internet age. And THEY CAN AFFORD IT.

I was so surprised when I finally watched Silence of The Lambs. It was fine! I was fine! One of the first films that really opened up horror for me was The Shining. I fucking love that movie. I don't love the hell inflicted on Shelley Duvall during production. That was awful. But the film SLAPS

The thing about doing criticism at-large is that there is a tradeoff to not sticking to one medium or genre: you will not, you cannot, immediately respond to or even experience every new hotness the moment it comes out. Well, not in a way that is thoughtful or memorable. Stuff has to steep.

I don’t think the roman helmet guys on musk’s csam emporium know this one (from josephine quinn’s how the world made the West)
By now the Roman imperial economy depended heavily on African agriculture, manufacturing, and trade, much of which was in the hands of Africans themselves. At the same time, local landowners attained great power and status in Rome: by the 180s CE nearly a third of Roman senators were of African origin.[33] These were men like Septimius Severus,
