The Word
How wonderful! I speak of the soul and seven people rise from their chairs and leave the room, seven others lean forward to listen. I speak of the body, the spirit, the mockingbird, the hollyhock, leaves opening in the rain, music, faith, angels seen at dusk-and seven more people leave the room and are seen running down the road. Seven more stay where they are but make murmurous disruptive sounds. Another seven hang their heads, feigning disinterest though their hearts are open, their hope is high that they will hear the word even again. The word is already, for them, the song in the forest. They know already how everything is better-the dark trees less terrible, the ocean less hungry—when it comes forth, and looks around with its crisp and lovely eye, and begins to sing.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

The Globe and Mail Foundation is doing important work to protect photojournalism in this country. Tonight, a new exhibit in partnership with Toronto’s Union Station featuring the work of some of this country’s most talented photographers. Check it out the next time you’re downtown!

Union Presente
Points of Departure
In partnership with The Globe and Mall Foundation
What does it mean to toll a true story through an image?
At this critical point in time when images are created, altered, shared and consumed at extraordinary speed, the role of the photojournalist has never been more important.
This exhibition brings together the work of 16 photojournalists from across Canada, selected to participate in the Globe Foundation's free Photo Academy, led by Chris Donovan. Created to help democratize access to the fickd, the program provides morging and developing storytellers with an opportunity to deepen their practice, pursue an independent body of work, and grow as visual journalists.
The photographs prosented here are the result of that journey.
Each represonts more than a captured moment. Behind every image is a photographer who chose to look more closely, to listen, to Duid trust, and to tell a story with care.
In an era of artificial intelligence, manipulated imagery, social media and an overwhelming volume of visual information, authentic photojournalism asks something different of us. It asks us to consider who made an image, whose story is being told, what we can trust, and why bearing witness still matters.
Great storyteling deserves a broad platform. Union Station is proud to lead and host the first exhibition of this program. More than 300,000 people rove through Union each day, bringing with them different experiences, historios and perspectives. By presenting these stories within one of Canada's most travelled civic spaces, we invite audiences beyond the traditional gallery to connect with stories they may not otherwise have encountered.
At Union, we believe public space should create opportunities for discovery, dialogue and connection. By giving these 16 storytellers a platform at the heart of the cily, we celebrate not only the photographs befare you, but the continued importance of the people committed to documenting our world with c…Photo of surfers People looking at a picture of a car crushed by a rockPicture of a woman standing on a horse in motion

A lot of people write off Mary Oliver as a nature poet but she is the most brilliant at so gently connecting the dots you’d never predict you’d end up on your knees sobbing
Clam
Each one is a small life, but sometimes long, if its place in the universe is not found out. Like us, they have a heart and a stomach; they know hunger, and probably a little satisfaction too. Do not mock them for their gentleness, they have a muscle that loves being alive. They pull away from the light. They pull down. They hold themselves together. They refuse to open.
But sometimes they lose their place and are tumbled shoreward in a storm. Then they pant, they fill with sand, they have no choice but must open the smallest crack. Then the fire of the world touches them. Perhaps, on such days, they too begin the terrible effort of thinking, of wondering who, and what, and why. If they can bury themselves again in the sand they will. If not, they are sure to perish, though not quickly. They also have resources beyond the flesh; they also try very hard not to die.
