I recall a professor who said that they alone kept the lab afloat. When asked "what about the grad students making min. wage while doing the research that goes into any grant proposal", the prof responded "How does that provide the budget?"

The thing I'll miss most, and what I'm proudest of from grad school is my union. We built this from a whisper campaign to a contract that guaranteed 3.5% raises each year, made non-discriminatory harassment grievable, and allowed international students time off to attend to visa issues.

It's okay to introduce a speaker with polite lies. You aren't under oath and don't need to call them "an interesting team member" in front of all their loved ones. Gotta love PhD defense season

I love Minneapolis
Jake Lang, a Nazi asshole, getting his ass picturesquely whooped in downtown Minneapolis by a person dressed as Spider-Man

I cannot overstate how much this photo looks like a comic book cover

minneapolis is incredible because you could be watching a bunch of hot punks bicycling around on custom freak bikes meanwhile down the road a man dressed as spiderman literally jumps off a building to punch jake lang in the face repeatedly on a giant cross

The neat thing is, even if you aren't in Minnesota, you can participate in Don't Vote For Angie Craig Day. (But if you are voting in Minnesota, you definitely must participate in this day. Vote for Peggy Flanagan!)

Funny, I got this feedback from the committee members who stuck around to congratulate me. "You used 'we' a lot, but this is your work and what *you* contributed to the field. You deserve to tell your reader that it's yours."

I won't forget the way my people showed up to my PhD defense. Friends, neighbors, comrades, found and blood family. The room was full, and nobody can take that away from me. I have the best people. (And I'm a doctor!)

My statement responding to the repeated racist and Islamophobic attacks by All of Minneapolis (AOM)
Text reading “FATEH
for MINNESOTA SENATE
STATEMENT: SENATOR OMAR FATEH RESPONDS TO RACIST & ISLAMOPHOBIC ATTACKS BY ALL OF MINNEAPOLIS (AOM)
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - "Today, we all saw yet another instance of a racist and xenophobic dog whistle from Karin Birkeland and the All of Minneapolis PAC - red-baiting and directly attacking my public service to the people of Minnesota as a State Senator.
The statements made in All of Minneapolis' email from this morning are absolutely disgusting. It is this exact kind of harmful rhetoric that is driving the hatred and divisiveness in our politics.
This is the latest example of a repeated pattern of discrediting and dehumanizing our elected leaders of color. Leaders like myself face countless death threats, racist comments, and violent messages daily - but this is a new low. All of Minneapolis continues to go back to their same old disgusting dirty tactics, spreading blatant lies and fear-mongering.
After the year we have been through with Operation Metro Surge, Minnesotans are sick of this politics of fear and division- point blank period.
DFL Party Leadership cannot continue to stay silent on the blatant harm and lies spread by All of Minneapolis. I am disheartened by the culture of enabling this kind of racism, xenophobia, and red-baiting by individuals in positions of power like Chair Richard Carlblom, who has yet to release any statement condemning this type of behavior. It is a complete and utter failure and sadly has been what I have come to expect from the politics of the DFL and its State Chair.
I represent the district with the most unmet needs and have fought tooth and nail every day to improve the lives of my neighbors and fellow Minnesotans. This is what the Southside is all about, and that's the leadership we deserve.
Now, more than ever, we need leaders who will not fold. We will not back down.
Solidarity, comrades."

Doing a PhD means spending 5 years earning ~minimum wage (if you only work 40 hrs/week, LOL) and then suddenly at the end, with no dramatic change in competence, having to massively readjust your concept of what your labor is worth
