Barak thinks he knows more than he does. Malka’s self-perception is so distorted that doesn’t think much of herself at all. Paz and Lior each blame themselves too much for what’s gone wrong in their lives. Paz is more self-aware about this than Lior. Shiri, however…

Exclusive Cover Reveal: Common Bonds 3 ed. by Claudie Arseneault, Em Ishii, and RoAnna Sylver
Today on the site, I'm delighted to reveal the cover of Common Bonds 3 ed. by Claudie Arseneault, Em Ishii, and RoAnna Sylver, the third in a series of anthologies starring aromantic main characters! The editors have written up their own intro to present a Kickstarter campaign, so I'll let them take it away! Common Bonds strikes a third time with a new volume of speculative short stories and poetry featuring aromantic characters.

They’re honest, but they’re not always correct. Part of the fun of multi-POV is that nobody has the whole picture, so I get to explore what one character THINKS another’s actions means, while the reader has broader insight into the situation.

Remind anyone who tries to use the phrase "separate the art from the artist" that it was originally coined for academic/critical practice in order to analyze the work. Not to cling onto stuff that actively harms people just because you like it a lot.

I've made it a resolution to comment on every single fic I read. I know it means a lot when people comment on my work. I know they love it as well. And it's an easy thing to do to support a fellow artist (writing is an artform). And like??? We need all the connection and love we can get right now ❤️

OK but imagine the apocalypse happened and you had to flee Earth and you couldn’t take any animals with you, and then when you finally came back to see what’s become of the world, there’s your cat sitting next to your rebuilt house like “I fixed it for you. I knew you’d come back if I did.”

You are a part of the great community of human creativity, and all writers are your peers. You learn from them, as a peer does; you carry on their work, or you improve upon them, or you repudiate them (or all three). All that you create is built in community with them.

If you're a writer, I encourage you to read widely--across lengths and genres and eras, self-published books and wildly popular books. Each author has a different way of solving the problems presented by a story, and in reading their solutions, you make those solutions available for your own work.

So desperately, I just want to read, study, and write. A challenging career change to make by default. I love reading what other people have to say. It brings me immense comfort in my darkest times. So why do I find it so hard to believe that other people might care about what I have to say?

Not so much “happy” in a typical sense, but I prefer to write endings that are a net positive for my characters. Everyone is growing and healing, whether they like it or not! That’s definitely a part of the “literary fiction” elements of my work. #awesomecharacters #writingcommunity #writesky

Eliminating the Impossible xkcd.com/3210/
4-panel comic. (1) [Person with white hat talking to another person.] PERSON 1 with white hat: As Sherlock Holmes said, When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. (2) PERSON 2: What about the possibility that you forgot to eliminate a possibility? Or that you eliminated one incorrectly? Both of those remain, too. (3) PERSON 1: You’re being pedantic. It’s just a general rule for deduction. PERSON 2: But it’s a *bad rule*. (4) PERSON 2: How often have you thought, “I can’t find this thing, and I’ve searched the whole house. The only place I haven’t looked is the car, so it *must* be there.” PERSON 2: ...And then it’s never in the car. PERSON 1: *It’s never in the car!*

A little known annoyance of being a writer and a lifelong reader: sometimes I can see another writer beginning to pull the threads they've woven tight, and I know the plot point we're working toward will piss me off but is a necessary part of the story. I SEE YOU MAKING ME FEEL THINGS, JERK. RUDE.

I’m proud of my work, and I take a lot of pride in being a writer. Something that’s helped is learning to separate “I do good work” from “my work is what this particular client, company, publisher, or reader wants.”

Reading my own book for fun has been an interesting way to practice accepting that it’s enough and complete in its current form. Despite noticing the small edits I could still make, I accept that what exists is final and keep reading. It’s been weirdly humbling.

First side character Barak meets on page is Adara. They’re both apprentices to the same wizard, which makes them rivals vying for his approval. And you don’t earn the approval of a council wizard by being friendly to your rival. Adara is very good at earning her magister’s approval.
