It's easy to give into cynicism, but I'd encourage anyone who's concerned about the government's upcoming AI policy to participate in the People's Consultation on AI (deadline: March 15). @cyn-k.bsky.social and others are doing the work to help Canadians be heard on this important issue.

Love to see these initiatives. Profs whose courses have been canceled by universities bowing to the Feds, starting their own courses. People of a certain age may recall the 70s, under Reagan, Thatcher, Mulroney and Pinochet, when free universities became a resistance thing. History is never linear.

Amongst many concerns with the CPC platform, I'm hoping gender-based violence experts/activists will take up the call and argue against the enhanced carceral approach to GBV proposed here. It's likely to have dire consequences for marginalized folks and use of s 33 must be contested.

I just put in conditional notice at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates. I sent that notice firm-wide and anticipate the email will leak. I would rather just share it with you myself.

Once, when I was in fifth grade, I failed a test and came home sobbing. My mom was disappointed in me but couldn’t figure out why I was so upset until I choked out, “now I won’t get into Harvard!!” I was a gunner, even then.

I’ve spent thirty years working to get into these spaces. I do not give them up lightly, and I have made plenty of moral compromises before. But this moment is existential; whether we get better from an already unacceptable status quo or get worse hinges on how we handle it. If being on this career path demands I accept that my industry—because this is certainly not unique to Skadden—will allow an authoritarian government to ignore the courts, I refuse to take it any further. As I have said before, others stand to lose far, far more than a paycheck.

I’m going to go cry and watch the new White Lotus, but rest assured I will be back tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. Thank you.

Job poster, with logos for Osgoode Hall Law School & York University:

Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Law (Associate/Full Professor)

Osgoode Hall Law School at York University invites applications from highly qualified applicants for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) at the rank of an Associate or Full Professor in Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Law. This appointment is contingent upon successful nomination to the Canada Research Chairs program (http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/) at the Tier 1 level. This is a tenure-stream appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

We seek to hire a renowned expert in the field of Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Law. This subject area broadly explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence technologies on legal systems and practices, and their implications for the development and regulation of law in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

[...] Recognizing the underrepresentation of women and gender minorities among CRCs, this position is open only to qualified researchers who indicate on the Affirmative Action self-identification form (see below) that they identify as women or gender non-conforming (e.g., genderfluid, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, trans man, trans woman). The appointment is part of the University’s Affirmative Action program, which is based on the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
