My essay "The Time Machine" came out yesterday in @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social! It's about late-Gen X nostalgia for a lost golden age as physically incarnated in a used mountain bike identical to one I bought in 1996 and spent 30 years riding into the ground: solarpunkmagazine.com/shop/solarpu...
My old ruined bike, with cranks, pedals, cargo rack and bar-ends removed, leaning by my garageMy new, old bike, looking just like the old old bike in every way except a shinier paint job, different seat, bar-ends, and cranks with purple composite pedals

Truly devastating. Climate disaster isn't the future, and it hasn't been for some time now. It's the present. The future, that's how we come together through radical hope to change and adapt.

The latest Demand Utopia is about public housing as climate infrastructure. The Corviale public housing complex in Rome is over a kilometer long, houses some 5k people, and is becoming a test case for climate adaptation to deadly heatwaves. Listen on our website or wherever you get your podcasts.

Keep our ear to the ground for better ways. We ado what we can with current methods, which are all fallible and have ethical issues. The current best methodology, in our opinion, is ask for documentation + ask craft questions a "AI author" isn't likely to be able to answer.
020
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
It definitely sucks. We hate everything about this whole situation 😥
020
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Fair points. But we also aren't going to change our methods at this point. It's better than feeding your work into AI checkers, which are also AI! Our method isn't perfect. But if we don't do anything, authors will get mad at us. If we do something, a lot of authors apparently won't like it either 🤷‍♀️

Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Okay folks, here's the update on the situation. You can read the full story on our blog. But the person behind two of the stories we published in March, Issue 26 of Solarpunk Magazine misrepresented themself and used AI to generate the stories. Thse two stories have been removed from Issue 26.

We Unknowingly Published AI Slop, and We're Taking Accountability
Solarpunk Magazine has removed two stories due to strong evidence of AI use, in addition to other submission policy violaitons. We're taking accountability.

Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
In addition, if we don't get documentaiton, we ask craft questions that someone who used AI is very likely to struggle to answer, whereas a human author who actually spent time and labor on their story would easily have answers for.

Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
There are no easy answers to any of this, and we're on the same team!!!!
120
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
3/3 At least we don't run your work through AI checkers without your permission like a lot of publishers do, considering the fact that AI checkers *are also AI*
020
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
2/3 Also, if for some reason an author can't provide that, then we ask craft questions that an author who uses AI is likely to struggle with answer. Either way, people will be mad at us if we do nothing, and people will complain if we do something. We stand by our methods.

Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
1/3 Word uses tracked changes. So it should be easy enough for you to provide an original copy that shows when the writing does and in what portions each day, and that you didn't just copy/paste the poem from an AI system.
200
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
3/3 Also, pretty much every word processing app using tracked changes now. So at the very least, an author should be able to provide us with an origianl copy that shows tracked changes so we can see that they didn't just copy/paste.
110
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
2/3 documentation, then we'll try to have a conversation with them about craft and their process. Between the two, it usually becomes clear quickly. An author who used AI generally struggles to anser in depth craft questions about the work.
130
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
1/3 That's fair to some extent. Unfortunately there's no method of detecting AI writing that's problem free. We believe this method is less problematic than using AI checkers, which are also generative AI apps. I should clarify, documentation isn't the only thing we use. If they don't have...
110
Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
2/2 If we don't get that documentation, their work will be removed from the issue, we will resend the updated issue to anyone who purchased it, and we'll update our store with the new version of the issue. Regardless of the outcome, we will update our community of readers and writers again tomorrow!

Solarpunk Magazine @solarpunklitmag.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
1/2 It's come to our attention that in an issue of Solarpunk Magazine published earlier this year, we may have unknowingly published work created by AI. We have given the person until tomorrow morning to provide us with documentation proving they wrote the story: early drafts, story notes, etc.

A BUNKER IS PRIVATE SURVIVAL.
A RESILIENCE HUB IS PUBLIC CARE.

FIND ONE PLACE.
INVITE THREE PEOPLE.

We take care of each other.

DURING AN EMERGENCY

A hub becomes the neighborhood’s nerve center.

Share accurate information. Check on neighbors. Connect people to resources. Coordinate rides and transport. Channel volunteers. Track needs and report back.

Information + care + coordination = resilience

5/8 How to start small. You don't have to be perfect. You need to begin.
HOW TO START SMALL

You don’t perfect. You need to begin.

Find a space people already trust. Make a clear agreement: keys, hours, roles, and responsibilities.Start with one hazard and one function. Set up a starter supply station. Create a communication plan (phone tree, texts, flyers, signs). Build a small, diverse team. Practice the plan before the crisis.

WHAT A HUB CAN PROVIDE

Cooling and clean air, water, food, internet, device charging, first aid and health info, emergency info, childcare and family support, translation and interpretation, emotional support, coordination and mutual aid.

Resilience hubs are infrastructure for care.

THE POLITICS OF ACCESS

A hub must be for everyone, not just some

Physically accessible, reachable without a car, multilingual & clear communication, pet friendly & aware, welcoming to unhoused neighbors, safety without policing people out.

Access is not a checklist. It’s the foundation.

2/8 The places we already trust. Hubs can be many things.
THE PLACES WE ALREADY TRUST

Libraries, schools, faith spaces, union halls, food pantries & co-ops, apartment common rooms, park & rec buildings, tribal & cultural centers, local businesses, neighborhood associations & mutual-aid spaces.

1/8 Our most recent episode of Demand Utopia: A Solarpunk Podcast just dropped. Part 4 of our series on Disaster Prep as Community Care is all about local resilience hubs and how to start one! #solarpunk #demandutopia #podcast #solarpunkmagazine #resilience
WHAT IS A RESILIENCE HUB?

A trusted community space that supports people before, during, and after a disruption.

A familiar place people already know and trust that expands its role during emergencies to coordinate resources, information, and care. A resilience hub supports recovery long after the crisis passes.

It’s not just a building. It’s a relationship.
