Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I've been active here, and I wanted to share an update from my world. 👇 (A thread)
A large bare-branched oak tree in silhouette frames a pastel sunrise view from a hilltop, overlooking rolling golden hills under a clear sky transitioning from peach to pale blue.

#BlueskyArtShow #Green I love the shapes and patterns we can discover in #MacroPhotography. I'm taking a social media break for the most part at the moment while I handle some self-care. I applaud each and every one of you sharing your visual magic on Bluesky. It's salve for the soul. 💜
Macro shot of a green succulent with pink-tipped leaves. The central leaf tip is in sharp focus, while the background is a soft, creamy blur of similar shapes and colors, creating an abstract, dreamy effect.

Resurfacing from my Hermit Mode to share a moment of celebration. Recently I won 1st prize in a photo contest co-sponsored by The Icon, a print lab in Los Angeles, for this photo. They printed and hung it in their gallery space, and today I visited. Such a great feeling. #PersonalMoment #Hooray
A smiling woman with short curly hair stands next to a framed black and white photograph of a modern building. The building has a geometric design with balconies and windows. The woman wears a purple jacket and a beaded necklace. Another framed photograph is partially visible behind her.A modern glass-and-stone building in black and white, emphasizing the angular, zig-zagging design. Strong contrasts between light and shadow highlight the geometric structure, while reflections in the glass create abstract shapes. The absence of color enhances the interplay of depth, form, and mirrored distortions in the windows.

One more for #UrbanGaze I'm in Ventura tonight to see Yaima in concert. This stage at the Ventura Music Hall is so pretty even before the show starts. #NightPhotography #Nightclub #PrettyLights #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited #PhotographersofBluesky
An indoor concert venue with a wide stage lit by purple and white spotlights. The view is from a low angle at the center of a long wooden table or railing that leads toward the stage. Rows of empty chairs and barstools line both sides of the venue, and the ceiling features a geometric wooden lattice design. A neon sign reading “Ventura” is visible in the back left corner.

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekQForQs "The Hidden Palace" - I didn't get many shots when I visited #QuintadaRegaleira in #Sintra, #Portugal, as it was heavily raining a good deal of the time, but I loved coming across the Chapel through the foliage like this. #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited
A view of the ornate Gothic spires of Quinta da Regaleira rising through mist, partially obscured by layers of vibrant green trees. The architecture’s intricate stone detailing is softly revealed through atmospheric haze. The scene is framed naturally by overhanging branches and forest foliage in the foreground.

#Stunday Sunday greetings from the middle of my photo outing day in Southern California! I've had so much fun shooting, starting with sunrise at Balboa Park & st had a great time at La Jolla Cove. Testing out my new phone's cameras and Lightroom Mobile, a new experience for me. 😁
A rocky shoreline with tide pools and flat green algae-covered stone platforms leading into calm water. The surface of the tide pools reflects a soft, cloudy sky above. The scene is softly lit, with muted tones of gray, green, and blue throughout. Rock textures and shallow water patterns are visible in the foreground.

I always thought these flames, which came out of a few narrow metal pipes at a party, were in the shape of a dancer. #Fire #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited
Bright orange flames captured mid-burst against a dark background, forming a loose arc with tendrils of fire reaching upward and to the right. A close-up view of a sculptural arrangement of tubular felt-like forms in blue and tan, curving rhythmically against a vibrant yellow background. The structures have a soft, fibrous texture and rounded edges with metal fasteners visible inside. The lighting creates strong highlights and shadows, emphasizing the object’s undulating surface.A row of repeating U-shaped felt structures in alternating blue and tan tones curves across the frame horizontally. The material has a soft, suede-like texture, and each form casts gentle shadows onto the next, creating a rhythmic visual pattern. The tight framing abstracts the object into a minimalist study of repetition and depth. An extreme close-up of soft, padded blue ridges arranged diagonally across the frame. The textile material is slightly fuzzy, with a smooth gradient from light to deep blue across the folds. #SensoryArt #light Anila Quayyum Agha, a Pakistani-American artist, was featured in the gallery onsite at #KewGardens during my visit in summer of '23,and I was captivated by her work. #ArtInstallation #LightandShadow
A brightly lit, suspended blue cube lantern dominates the center of a darkened room within an art installation at Kew Gardens. The lantern projects intricate, repeating geometric and floral patterns in shades of white and light blue onto the surrounding walls, ceiling, and polished wooden floor. The walls are covered in a deep red material, upon which the projected patterns create a contrasting layer of light and shadow. The floor reflects the light and patterns, adding depth to the scene. Black linear elements are embedded in the floor, possibly guiding paths or part of the installation's design. The overall effect is an immersive and visually captivating experience of light, shadow, and pattern.

#Stunday A #DigitalArt piece I made from a photo (see alt text for process). It’s one of my faves—so much so, I had it printed on a cloak, which I’m wearing here. There’s a special joy in seeing one's art worn, not just framed. #WearableArt #IMadeThis
A digitally manipulated kaleidoscopic mandala artwork featuring a symmetrical radial design in earthy tones of green, brown, blue, and gold. The image includes repeating zigzag and diamond patterns encircling a central round motif, reminiscent of woven textures. The composition is dense with intricate, flowing lines and layered visual depth.

My creative process:

I used the accompanying image of this post as a starting point. First, I used an Android art app called Mirror Lab (now called One Lab) to manipulate the image into a kaleidoscopic pattern, using my fingers to adjust the pattern to my liking.

Then, I took that resulting image into Photoshop where I used a Wacom pen to hand-paint selections where I saw pleasing patterns. I separated each pattern onto its own layer.

Finally, I used other art apps (Topaz Studio, Filter Forge) to make textural and tonal adjustments to the individual layers until I was satisfied with the results.

The process of hand-painting selections has become a trusted meditative outlet for me and brings me great peace while I'm doing it. I rarely have a goal in mind when I start a piece of art; it's the journey that scratches the itch.
A woman (that's me!) stands smiling against the trunk of a large tree in a park. She wears a vibrant cloak adorned with a radial mandala-like design in earth tones, with a central circular pattern over her chest. The cloak features geometric and zigzag motifs in green, blue, and amber. She pairs it with loose-fitting blue pants and matching blue sneakers. Sunlight filters through the trees in the softly blurred background.A ceiling light fixture with a woven, circular rattan design that forms a spiral pattern around a central exposed bulb. The light casts a geometric shadow pattern on the ceiling, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with a touch of visual complexity.

I used this image as a base to create the digital art piece that accompanies this image in the post. See alt text of the artwork for more details about my process.

A kaleidoscopic digital art piece featuring a central starburst pattern in shades of lavender, pink, and white, radiating outward into a layered mandala. Surrounding the center are repeating scalloped shapes textured with glass-like bumps, originally derived from a teal hobnail glass. The dominant hues are purples, pinks, and aquas, with reflective highlights giving the appearance of depth and shimmer.

#MarchIntoLandscapes #Misty That time I found a private campground with its own little lake and a pedal boat...pure magic in the early morning. #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited #Reflection #LandscapePhotography #Landscape #Serene
A quiet morning scene on a forested lake, with mist rising gently from still water that reflects the silhouetted trees and soft golden sky at sunrise.

#ThrowbackThursday Hiiii, Bluesky friends! I've been MIA lately due to work taking my focus, but this is still my favorite place to spend time scrolling. Your images give me such pleasure & inspiration! Thank you for that. 💜 ~Polihale Beach, #Kauai, 2016~ #EastCoastKin #Reflection
A serene beach scene at Polihale, Kauai, featuring a calm tidal pool reflecting the sky. A lone figure stands in the distance near the shoreline, adding a sense of scale. Towering cliffs rise in the background, partially illuminated by warm sunlight. Soft clouds float across the sky, mirrored in the still water, while the golden sand displays intricate wind-sculpted patterns.

#MacroMonday I love visiting botanical gardens anywhere I go, but the ones in tropical locales - like where this shot came from - yield eye candy like no others. #SecretGardenofMaliko #Maui #Bloomscrolling #OnlyBeautifulThings #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited #G+Circle #ArcanumAlumni
A close-up macro photograph of a jade vine flower with a gracefully curved turquoise petal wrapping around its deep purple stem. The background consists of a soft blur of green, pink, and yellow hues, creating a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere. The intricate details of the petal’s texture and color gradient are accentuated by gentle lighting.
